Labradoodle question
Hi all, i am new here, have said hi in the right thread (i hope) this is my question, i have a labradoodle bitch who has turned 2yrs, lots of people have asked me if i am going to breed her as they would like a pup. This was never my intention, but if i could be sure all pups would get good homes and as i would like to keep one myself i may consider it.
My question is, (as know nothing about genetics and the like) if my Labradoodle is bred to another would the resulting pups be Labradoodle pups or do they need to be first cross Lab x Poodle. Not found any info to answer this or maybe not looking in the right place. Hope you don`t mind me asking. |

Hi Fran, thanks rfor replying, most people asking about pups are family and friends so i do know a lot about them. Why do you think it will be a big litter? is it something to do with them being cross breeds Jane

Re: Labradoodle question
Hi,
This is quite a common queston, your dog is lovely are you going to breed it? In my opinion that is not any justification to be breeding, The Labradoodle is a crossbreed, unless there is a spefic reason for breeding such as working or showing. Some things to think about, Is your bitch Kennel Club registered, if not it is not really advisable to breed from her, having registration at least ensures that you have a recorded history of her parentage. Without any papers it is not possible to ensure that her ancestors were pure bred. Is your bitch healthy enough to be bred from. How old is she, is she clear from hereditary defects? Have you had her checked by the vet to see if she is suitable to breed from, or will she need a Caesarian? Do you understand the risks involved. If everything goes well then no problems. However, you could loose some if not all of the puppies, although thankfully this does not happen very often, or you could loose your bitch. If you do loose your bitch and the puppies survive, they will need to be hand reared, this involves feeding every three hours, DAY AND NIGHT. Can you afford a litter. Lots of people think of breeding as a way of making money, this is not usually the case, and if things do go wrong you could incur a lot of expenses along the way. The stud fee for the dog, extra food for the bitch during pregnancy and lactation, weaning the puppies, their food this is all normal. What if your bitch needs a call out from the vet at 2am, or a Caesarian in the middle of the night, this can be very costly. Are you aware of the work involved, lots of lovely puppies making lots of mess as they get older, all very time consuming to keep them clean and preparing 4 to 5 meals a day, watching over them when they are fed, is every puppy getting enough to eat. Weaning them from Mum at the right time. Finding suitable homes can be a nightmare, all calls needs to be carefully vetted as they are people out there to whom you wouldn’t want to sell your puppies too. This can be very time consuming. Every one needs to be carefully vetted, is someone at home most if not all of the day, do the children seem frightened of the dogs, is this a commitment the whole family want to make. If you have any doubts about your prospective homes them don’t sell to these people, it is worth hanging one to a puppy until the right family come along. Are you prepared to take any puppies back that you have bred and re home them if necessary.

Re: Labradoodle question
Thankyou Sallyanne that is a lot to think about. Of course i will research it carefully and will only do so if i can give the best to mom and the pups. As said before it is close friends and family who want pups so, yes i will know if they are right for the pups.
Sallyanne do you know about Labradoodles and whether 2 labradoodles make labradoodle pups, wouldn`t want to call pups that if they are not should i decide to have a litter. Thanks for your time. Jane ![]() |

Re: Labradoodle question
as far as i know your labradoodle if mated with another labradoodle would make f2 labradoodles (meaning second generation ) not first cross ( lab x poodle ) = f1 first generation cross . Sally anne had some good points about breeding your girl eg cost , time ect , and mostly suitable homes for a possible litter of 10 or more . Do you have 10 members of your family who want one ??? The health issues of your girl is a moral one is your girl good enough too breed or would you be producing pups who have inherrited coditions such as hip dysplacia and eye conditions , all the pups would need to be vet checked and at least given their first lot of vaccines and not given to new homes till at least 8-10 weeks old . Could you vet prospective owners ensuring these people were buying for the righ reasons not just because they are fashionable . Most good breeders will do all of this and more , I was asked if i was going to let either of my labs have litters and at first i thought about it then i descided against it as there are so many litters out there already and rescue dogs all looking for homes , I also had to resign myself that my 2 are not of good enough quality to breed from , not having a full history i didnt want to pass on anything to pups that would mean new owners would have to pick up the pieces of bad genetics , first and foremost our girls are members of the family , in the future when i have time and money i wouldnt mind getting a good quality bitch and breed but not at the moment and i surely wouldnt do it without at least having a short list of people interested that would be willing to wate for a speacial litter to be born . In short if you descide to breed your dog as many people do its up to you but be aware of the bigger picture not just, my family want some and i want to keep one myself , Ask yourself , if anything went wrong would the family be prepared to help foot the cost of medical expenses and offer time and support if needed and if the litter was big would you be able to find good homes for thoes left ???
Andrea

Quote:
They are in my eyes crossbreeds, until such a time the KC Recognise them. As for what the pups will turn out like who knows? Your bitch is a crossbreed,so more than likely will be the sire, unless you know the history of these dogs and dogs further down in the breeding who knows? So just suppose you had a litter and your friends and family pulled out, what would you do then?
