Hand rearing Chihuahua losing weight

Follow on from this thread Advice for chihuahua hand rearing

yesterday, he was gulping the welpi down but today and last night will not even suckle off the bitch and doesnt really want the welpi

Born at 110g
yesterday 96g (after feed)
now 86g (before feed)

Im so worried i could cry

Ive been back to the vets today and they said i should not be worried about weight gain!!!
They checked him over and said that he is fine, strong not dehydrated etc

Would you be worried about this drop in weight?

He was born a week to early and is now 5 days old

Re: Hand rearing Chihuahua losing weight

Go to a different vets for a second opinion if this was me I would be extremely worried. I have been down this road once to often with my own litters, he needs so liquid life aid down him and possibley some nutri drops to give him some energy, he is not suckling because is getting to weak, if you want to save this pup you are goingt ohave to get a second opinion and possibly start tube feeding him.

If you need any advice over the phone pm me and I will give you my number as I am only about 20 mins away from you.

I also have a very good friend who breeds chihuahua's and she also may be able to help you .

Take care

Sarah

The pup just wont go on the nipple at all, i keep trying to put him there but he wont suck, he is VERY strong and just pushs it away with his nose
he isnt weak at all
He has a round tummy
Im getting welpi down him

I just wont understand the vets reasoning for not being worried about weight gain. They keep saying vet and nurse as long as he is strong dont worry

Re: Hand rearing Chihuahua losing weight

Toy breeds drop in weight extremely quick as tiny pups, if you can at least put drops of the welpi down him every hour or so this should help keep his weight balanced if you can get him passed a week old he may start trying to suckle by his self, prem puppies tend to be a little backwards when they are born and suckling tend to switch on like a light bulb about a week later we had similar problems with the smallest in our litter one day he was struggling to feed the next he was suckling like he had always done it.
Use a syringe and just drop the milk into him as often as you can and keep putting him in with your bitch so she can stimulate him which will also helo him to realise what he should be doing.

As I said I have a friend who live just up the road from me who has been breeding and showing chi's for many many years she may be able to help you too.

take care

Sarah

i would also be very worried about the weight loss and yes unfortunately i have been down this road myself with a sad outcome but i really hope your little one manages to pull through i had to hand feed because she suddenly stopped suckling on mum ,she wouldnt have the bottle either so i was syringing her every 2 hours 24/7 but although she seemed to be taking the milk she was getting weaker and losing weight daily and very sadly we lost the fight with her, but please try everything first but sometimes i feel it is just not meant to be

Re: Hand rearing Chihuahua losing weight

Thanks
Ive got a good friend who breeds chihuahuas also.
Just wanted extra opinions
I just keep getting told different things and dont know what to do
It would kill me lose him, it hurt losing his mum but having this pup to concentrate on hasn't made it as hard as it could have been.
Im getting milk down it every hour in the day and every 2 hours at night

My other bitch loves the pup, is forever cleaning it.

Im going to take your advice and see another vet on monday if things dont get any better.

Im so glad i work for myself, else i dont know what id do!

Thank you for taking the time to reply

Re: Hand rearing Chihuahua losing weight

It sounds like you are doing everything you can to keep him going, I jyst hope he is like my prem pups and switches on soon for you. You are very lucky that your bitch has taken him on as Chihuahua bitches can be very protective of thier pups, I know mine wouldn't have taken on another bitches pups, yet my pom girls would take on any puppy no matter what breed, when they have babies they are fantastic with thier pups and will share each others pups if they have them around the same time.

Again good luck with the little man he sounds like a fighter.

take care

Sarah

Thank you, its just so heart breaking and hard knowing what to do
It worse than having your own child

Yes i am really lucky she look to him, she loves him to death and hate it when i take him away for a feed.

If i was my other chihuahua bitch who gave birth, she would have not taken him. She is evil once she gives birth and bites you.

Re: Hand rearing Chihuahua losing weight

I dont have any experience with fadeing puppy syndrome but was very interested to read a post on the thread Help with fadeing puppy page 2 of this section. Now Im not sure if this is what your pup has or whether hes not wanting to eat for other reasons but it might be worth you having a read of this thread. The lady speaks of Plasma transfusion which helped some of her litter

Oh gosh I do hope things pick up for the little one, you must be beside yourself with worry x
