Advice for chihuahua hand rearing

Hello,
Im having a really bad time at the moment
my chihuahua gave birth monday night 1 week early
NIGHTMARE BIRTH - she was a big chihuahua, healthy, pedigree etc etc

Gave birth to two 110g boy 65g girl

Next day went to the vets and one was dead in her, they got it out

That night hand feeding - morning girl died mouth open all the time, trouble breathing

Mum went down hill

They spade her but utrus leaked (i think thats what they said -im so tried)

She died this morning - my heart is breaking

My other chihuahua gave birth 12 days ago so i gave her the remaing pup, she loves it

But the pup wont suckle on its own so im hand feeding while putting it on her nipple. Its lively and very active

It now weight approx 96g

Im feeding it on welpi, 1 ml every hour in day, every 2 hours at night 1-2ml

Im after any advice from breeders that will help me, any tips etc etc

Im so upset and seems my girl that died is alot older that what i thought and this has happened before as there was scars from old surgery when they cut her open

THE OLD OWNER failed to tell me, i told him i wanted to have a litter from her and he said thats fine IM SO ANGRY THIS COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED

Please dont shoot me down, i did everything correct, healthy bitch, good size, good pedigree etc etc

ok . try and get the recent pup on to a nipple that is full of milk after the others have suckled on it and drawn the milk down but before they take too much milk (if you get what i mean). hopefully he should soon suck (it does take patience) hold him on the nipple.

He is suckling, but i have to put him on there and hold him, he keeps falling off.
But doesnt seem to be getting enough so have to top him up with welpi, which he really gulps down.
he is a fighter

Re: Advice for chihuahua hand rearing

Sorry to hear about your other dog thats such a shame
i have hand reared two of my chihuahua litters and its hard but
if you already have your other chihuahua who is willing to help then i wouldnt be hand feeding aswell.
Every 1 / 2 hours i would put the pup on the back nipple and hold him so he can feed without falling off
if it is feeding even with help and putting on weight there is no need to keep topping it up unless the bitch doesnt have enough milk.
Have you hand reared a pup before? as if you dont do it right the milk could be going into it lungs and drowning it rattled breathing and gasping is a sign this is happening.
By the way your puppies and mum are lovely.

He is still hungry after being on the nipple and i weighed him and he lost 2g, i didnt hand feed him for 4 hours today (just nipple)
No gasping

Re: Advice for chihuahua hand rearing

From my experience as a breeder, puppies that fail to suck without help from I have always spent alot of time trying to get it. I usually find the trick is to get some milk on the bitches teet, and rub the puppies nose gently round the teet so they get the idea, I then keep doing it until the pup gets hold of the nipple and rub its back while it has hold of the nipple and it should stimulate the pup to suck.

I am so sorry for your loss Its awful when things like this happen. Its nice to know that your other chi is taking care of the small one. If he has alot of enegy it is a good sign, Its when they start to fade I worry

Your dog is beautiful and so are the pups! I have always wanted a Chi

Ive just got him on the nipple again, he sucks like mad but keeps falling off, and never seems to get enough, always hungry after
Thank you im so upset this could have been avoided, id never had bred from her if i had known, its all about the money to some people

Can anyone advise on weight gain?
Vet told me not to worry so much about it as long as he is active, which he is very.
