Thank you im so upset this could have been avoided, id never had bred from her if i had known, its all about the money to some people

Can anyone advise on weight gain?
Vet told me not to worry so much about it as long as he is active, which he is very.
No problem Yeah thats a very good sign that he is sucking like mad try holding him up a bit so hes not having to reach. With my pups when I had a slow starter I held her up so she was tiring her self out trying to reach, held her there until she was full and she went to sleep Yes I do agree about the money, obviously the people who sold her to you just wanted rid and didn't mind what happened to her in the future..

Re: Advice for chihuahua hand rearing

What is his weight in ounces please? my last chi litter although born on time were around 4 1/2 oz's my last pom litter who were born 6 days early were around 3 1/2 - 4 oz's all three of my pom pups lost weight due to my bitch coming down with an infection and althought she was producing milk there was no nutrition in it for the pups so I had to hand rear them until the antibiotic's kicked in to her system and she started setteling down and the pups started to put weight on with both feeding from the bottle and off mum.
I took pretty much the whole first week to get Arwin sorted and back on full par to be left to sort the pups herself, it also took about 3-4 days before the pups atrted to put enough weight on that I was happy with them.
The info you have been given so far is brilliant but as others have said I would only be using your welpi to top up if he isn't getting enough from the dam, you also need to sit with him and hold him on the teat, which in my case ment sitting and holding in one hand with my fingers around his head and mouth and when the pup laches on stroke him on along the side of his mouth this will help stimulate him to suckle, good luck and I hope thing start to look up for you very soon.

Also where abouts in the country are you based?

take care

Sarah

Re: Advice for chihuahua hand rearing

He sucks fine, just is to rough and moves his head too much and falls off
My bitch as quite big nipples also

Vets checked him over and no cleft palate

Im putting him on the nipple every hour and topping up every 2 hours if he wants it. You know when he wants the welpi he sucks like mad on the syringe

Re: Advice for chihuahua hand rearing

My pups loved the welpi also but they really went mad for the Royal Canin puppy milk and they improved much more too. Alot of the vets that are sponsored by RC supply it now. You may find he suckles quite well from a weaning bottle I found I had to make the whole a little bigger though.

He is a good weight tbh for being so early, as long as he doesn't drop below 2 1/2 ozs he should start to pick up. have you also checked to make sure he isn't getting dehidrated as this can happen very quickly with toy breed puppies and it will also make him weak which would explain why he isn't managing to hold on well. I would recomend you get hold of some Liquid Life Aid it will help to pick him up. You can try asking your vet for it if he deals with farm animals he will stock it otherwise you can google it and it will be with you in no time.

I hope he pulls through for you

take care

Sarah

Re: Advice for chihuahua hand rearing

Thank you
Im going down pets at home in a bit to get a weaning bottle

As of 2am last night, he has not been taking the welpi very well. Normally he gulps it down. Im still managing to get some down him.

He is still very healthy and active, VERY strong

Re: Advice for chihuahua hand rearing

So Sorry to hear such a sad story

I do hope the little boy pulls through, he sounds strong. We had problems with mabel when she was born she was very weak and could not latch on at all without me holding her on to the teat, but once she was on she did manage to suckle with me holding her and by day 7 she was doing it herself, we did a combination of the advice given, squeeze milk on to teat rub her little muzzle on the teat, help her open her mouth and get her latched on. What we also did was before each feed wed warm her up by cuddling her first, she seemed to suckle and latch on better

All best wishes sent to you x
