Re: How Close

timmis mum was mated with her own son..... is this also done or is it a bit close, i have never breed anything that is related as i thought it was not to be done.unless of course they were far enough down the line like say a g,g,grandparent or something like that

I personally would not breed any siblings & these sort of matings should be done only by people with the greatest of knoweledge of the breed & lines etc...
Yes agree,
Or it's done, when a breed is new and the gene pool is small.

I personally wouldn't breed that close.

Re: How Close

I personally wouldn't want anything more than maybe a common distant relative. That is because I am still fairly new to the breed and I don't feel I have anywhere near enough knowledge of all the bloodlines etc to even comtemplate closer breeding. Plus, Goldens have such a large gene pool, it is easy to outcross.

I have no problem with inbreeding or line breeding if people ABSOLUTELY know what they are doing. Contrary to popular belief, it will not create any problems that weren't already there, but it can highlight problems that are there very easily. It can also be a good way to improve certain traits in a breed.

Re: How Close

We have done half- sister x half-brother, grand-daughter - grandfather, uncle - niece and then we outcross to bring in new lines. It takes a lot of thought and 10 generation pedigrees normally but it is the way to 'cement' a type before bringing in new blood. My father was one of the real old terrier men and they do some real close matings!!!
