If people can't find a breed that suits them, in looks, temprement and manageability, then maybe dog owning is not for them.

If, by 'turning my face against the development of new breeds' I am seeking to impose my will on others, aren't those who wish to corssbreed/breed momgrels/crate new breeds simply doing the same thing? In the same vein, if I feel that dogs which are bred from should have the appropriate health tests, aren't I also imposing my will upon others? Would that be wrong also?
Whoa back people!!! This is getting into dangerous territory now.
I entirely agree that some people are selfish but I would guess that you have the dog you want. Its other people who can make do
I do see dog owning as a right, providing you can look after a dog properly. A pet can bring so much into someones life after all. To make pet ownership some sort of privilege would mean what? Only people who earn over £30,000? who voted Labour? who drive a Volvo? who you like? That way madness lies.
No argument here about health.
Breeders will only breed what people want - market forces and all that. `

In that case why are thousands of dogs pts every year and thousands waiting in rescues for there perfect family forever home.
Surely supply out does demand in the dog world?

Please!!!
I am not advocating exterminating anything!!!!! Just the reverse in fact. My original point (way back when) was that we should go on to develop new breeds. Since then things may have wandered a bit but I am PRO-DOG all the way (except Westies who DO need exterminating in my opinion)

I think all human beings are selfish. Some more than others, and some are mostly very unselfish, but all would at some point put themselves over others, it is human nature.

Pet owning is a privalege. That doesn't mean there should be any criteria for it other than that people are able to care for and finance the pet properly, but plenty of people still want a dog so get one, regardless of whether they work all day so have to leave it on it's own, or whether they have the time to invest in it.

Yes, bad breeders will only breed what people want, I don't believe good, ethical breeders will. That is the reason that people who are turned down by responsible breeders can still get a dog, puppy farmers and back yard breeders for whom once the cash is handed over, the 'transaction' is finished and it is simply seen as a business. If that kind of breeding was stopped, and only responsible breeders who would take the dog back at any time in it's life, should the current owner no longer be able to keep it, were allowed to breed, rescue centres would be virtually empty.

I do have the breed I want. I sat down with my husband decided what we wanted in a dog and looked at the breeds available, then chose one. It woudl never have occured to us that we needed to create a whole new breed as nothing was quite perfect for us.

Quite right and I apologise- that was a glib comment.
However, he said undaunted, I do stand by my original idea of progressing down the new breed road. It is not the dogs that cause the problem it is the people. To ignore what is happening will not stop it, just leave the field clear for others, who may not be so caring of their dogs, to exploit.

Re: Do You Think There Is Need For 'New' Breeds?

No breed of dog is perfect so why go on to cross 2 breeds to create another that will have the bad points of both breeds?
What may suit one person may not suit another - The perfect breed for me is far from the perfect breed for anyone else - But there are plenty of well established breeds for people to chose from - yes you can cross 2 breeds or create a new one but it will take many years before a breed standard will be acheived - what is missing from the already huge list of breeds???? I dont think there is anything missing, there are plenty of breeds available to suit any life style these days - all these breeds have history and not many are still being used for the original purpose but fit very well into todays life styles.

Good points / bad points- that is the art of breeding. Not my field of expertise I am afraid.
Your point about there being many breeds already is perfectly true and I am sure that there is a horse for every course. What is also undeniable however is that there is a demand for more choice fueled by (mainly) the media exposure of some of these "new breeds". This cross-breeding has already got widespread recognition in the US and will undoubtedly get here in due course - all the American ideas do, for good or ill. There are several hybrid dog websites available on the internet.
Breed standard means little to the vast majority of dog buyers who are after a healthy family pet of the right size, temprement and price. They have no intention of showing their pet, it's for the kids to play with and to take for a walk to the park. This is what dogs are for (my opinion). They are a family extension.
Breed Standard is a subjective measure anyway. My dogs better than yours no matter what so-and-so says!
Back to the initial question - there is a place for new breeds because to stop their development is both un-natural and impossible. All you could do is refuse to recognise them in the Kennel Club or such like and thus have less influence over their development.

Re: Do You Think There Is Need For 'New' Breeds?

How can it be 'un-natural' - these breeds are not living in the wild and choosing to breed - we 'the higher power' for want of a better phrase are forcing them together for our own selfish desires. Nothing natural in that whatsoever.

Yeah - I wasn't too happy with that expression when I used it but couldn't think of a better one to convey the thought that surely it would be better to create a dog that is custom built for the modern world than getting an older breed, which was created for a different environment, and making it convert. I would cite as an example the recent dangerous dog saga. Some things are in the nature of an animal (or person?) and will break out under certain circumstances. This should not be taken as any sort of criticism of a particular breed as we made it, over many years, for our own reasons. It is just a square peg / round hole situation. You can see why I tried for a short expression to cover this now.
