If it has not then you are doomed if you ever find the perfect example. With regard to the cost of these dogs people are able to make their own minds up as to what they want, why they want it and how much they will pay. Show standard KC dogs are not cheap anyway. I want people to have pets that suit their circumstances and if that means using new breeds then that is fine by me. Look forwards not back.
So what about rescue?
What when these new pets don't fit requirements as not enough is known about them they end up in rescue.
Is that acceptable?
Show standard dogs are not cheap but they are health tested, background is known etc......
These designer dogs and new crossbreeds cost alot of money, hardly anything is known about them.

So my argument is,With the ever increasing population of dogs, rescues struggling and picking up the pieces of accidental matings, crossbreeds, etc why create new breeds to add hundreds or possibly thousands of puppies which will add to further strain on rescues, some of these will be dumped or go through rescue, some with behaviour and temprement issues.

Is this really the way forward???

Re: Do You Think There Is Need For 'New' Breeds?

Labradoodles are crossbreeds, simple. They were originally bred to try and get a hypoallergenic breed that could be used as guidedogs. However, it appeared that not all of them were hypoallergenic, so the plan to breed them for this was stopped. Sadly, a few people caught onto this 'new breed' and thought it was a away to make money, so kept breeding them. Almost ALL labradoodles come from non health tested parents, and ssadly, when they, it is because the parents are used to breed both purebred labs and poodles, and then on 'in between' seasons used to breed labradoodles.
Exploitation at the highest level.

What is the need for labardoodles exactly? I can't see it myself. I can also see the people who hold the Beagle close to their hearts sickened by the fact that some might feel it hasn't kept up with the times and needs to be altered. Plenty of people chose to keep beagles as they are, happily. For those whom a beagle is not suitable, they can get another breed, as there is undoubtedly one that is suitable.

Perhaps, garydogz, if you know a living situation for which there is not currently a suitable breed for, you can enlighten me as yto what it might be, as I am stumped.

OK. My own fault for poking the bear!
I am actually arguing principal here and do not pretend to have all the answers. Rescue is emotive and I am not in favour of an increase in numbers of dogs but would argue for the replacement of existing breeds. After all how many of us need to protect our flocks from large predators?
As to money surely an expensive dog is less likely to be abandoned than a cheap one?
If you make a crossbreed from two healthy parents and raise them well you have done all you can but surely this is not too different from pure breed dogs?
Above all though you must realise that people WANT these dogs and so they will happen, albeit with varying degrees of success, because that is the sort of world we live in. You can argue all you like about the rights and wrongs but put J-Lo on screen with one or one in an ad and the demand is created.
The original question was do we need new breeds and it is my belief that the perfect dog breed is not out there yet.

Wow! so many points there I don't know where to start.
People do bad things - fact of life I'm afraid and I am not in any way condoning "in - between" breeding. Please accept that in arguing for new breeds I am not suggesting anything other than the same breeding practices
which should be used now.
Surely the fact that Labradoodle breeding has gone on despite the abandonment of the original purpose would suggest that people want them for their own sakes?
As to the Beagle then if you want one and can do it justice then fine, have a real one. All I would say is that if I should want a Beagle-LIKE couch potatoe (an extreme I know but it's just for the sake of argument) then shouldn't I be afforded the same right?
By turning your face against the development of new breeds (crossbreeds, mongrels whatever you call them) you are seeking to impose your will on others. Thou shalt or thou shalt not as I see fit sort of thing.

Sadly, people are inherantly selfish, and, partly the way society is on the whole these days, seem to think they have some sort of right to have what they want. No, if you should want a Beagle-LIKE dog that has couch potato qualities, you should not be afforded the right to have one. Dog owning is NOT a right, it is a privilage and it is a pity more people do not see it that way. If people can't find a breed that suits them, in looks, temprement and manageability, then maybe dog owning is not for them.

If, by 'turning my face against the development of new breeds' I am seeking to impose my will on others, aren't those who wish to corssbreed/breed momgrels/crate new breeds simply doing the same thing? In the same vein, if I feel that dogs which are bred from should have the appropriate health tests, aren't I also imposing my will upon others? Would that be wrong also?

Re: Do You Think There Is Need For 'New' Breeds?

Many moons ago, you could say that I was a K.C snob...

Other than taking on the odd dog out of rescue I only ever purchased K.C registered dogs, 8 years ago I became quite disillusioned with the K.C breed that I have always owned and loved and the breed even though I love them has its issues that I am still not entirely happy with.
8 years on, there is STILL no known health tests for the breed it is only 'recommended' that breeders do them..most don't.

So I took a turn in direction with the dogs I loved decided to look into alternatives two years later it was only after much research that I decided to take the plunge and buy the 'alternative' he came from fully health tested parents and is free himself from heditary defects known to both his breed and his counterpart one.
I think there is room for 'alternatives' but in no way do I mean this by throwing any old breed together to create a 'new' breed.
