Question Who Are The Pups Likely To Take After?

If you have two dogs of the same breed but one is bigger than the other are the pups more likely to take after the mum or the dad in size?

Re: Who Are The Pups Likely To Take After?

I've heard so many different things (mostly that it comes from mum), but I generally find that most well thought out and planned litters supervised by those who know what they are getting into with genetics are actually a near perfect mix of the best qualities from mum and dad.

Re: Who Are The Pups Likely To Take After?

??????? depends on the grandparents sizes as well as the parents sizes i would expect. If they came from a background of larger sizes then they may take after the bigger parent, and vise versa.

I found from this litter they took after mum, they have her distinctive eyes and also there Grandparent (mums sire) was fawn and i got 4 fawn puppies and the rest were her colour. There was no silver like dad :O x

Re: Who Are The Pups Likely To Take After?

It all depends on the genetics and what is behind both dogs. If the big dog had a very small mother then that may come out in the pups, if the smaller dog came from generations of big dogs but was bullied as a pup and therefore didn't eat enough to fulfil her genetics, she may be capable of producing huge pups if mated to a big dog. That is why it is important to look at the genetics behind the dogs.

A pup gets a random assortment of genes from its parents and which ones it gets are in the lap of the gods.

If they both come from assorted sizes of dogs then who knows what sizes you will get.
That is why breeders tend to choose parents who are quite similar and similarly bred, that way you get, more uniform litters.

This.

There is no real trend as it is purely down to genetics. 50% from Mum, 50% from Dad, who then have 50% the same genes as their parents and so on. Think of it like kids, I am one of three, I am like my Dad, my brothers like my Mum, yet we still all look and are very different from another

Our A2 Biology exam is all about genes and genetics, its not really very interesting, its just luck of the draw!

Re: Who Are The Pups Likely To Take After?

Honestly depends on their anchestory Janice!!
For intance my girl is tall!!! within breed standards but tall all the same!!! when looking for a match I sought the help of my mentor!! who has kept my breed for thirty years! Forgetting the dog!! she knew which of the dogs were small and which were large if you know what I mean! so hence choose chat she considers a perfect match!!

Would never have done it myself!!

MUST!!! point out! that really any mating there should NOT be more they a difference of 3.5 inches between dog and bitch!!!

Why is it 3.5 inches? ok this is what baffles me, if my hubby was say 6.4 and i was say 4.4 i shouldn't be at any more risk than any other woman having a child. Why is it different for dogs?
