Breeding Back To Back

What do you think about breeding bitches consecutively,
I don't have a problem if the bitch misses but to breed a litter after the last one I don't agree with.

Any thoughts?

Well you will know my answer - no - I dont agree with back to back matings - if the bitch misses then yes but other than that no!

I have only done it twice, once when the bitch only had one puppy and was getting on in age (she was 5!!) and once when on the recommendation bitch had a ceasar and lost all the pups and I mated her next time as they said it is the best way to get the 'insides' back in the right position before they adhere in the wrong place!!!

Hate having litters from older bitches my welsh springer is 7 and I had retired her at the age of 5 BUT her breeder had lost her line after 40+ years and Seren was the last remaining bitch to enable her to recover her line, so gave in to that one - in saying that this is only her 3rd litter.

Re: Breeding Back To Back

I would generally say 100% not - but a friends bitch has just gone through a terrible delivery which ended up as a caeserian and only one live pup. The vet adviced her that her bitch would benefit from a back to back. I know its only one vets opinion but as I know very little about breeding I guess there must be some cases where its appropriate

It is because when they do a ceasar they just 'drop' everything back in and stitch up when they then have another litter it is like 'blowing up a balloon' and puts everything back where it 'came from', if left the womb will adhere to a position that is wrong and can lead to complications next time of breeding so by breeding from the next season you cut down the chance of having to have another ceasar

Re: Breeding Back To Back

Its so sad when so much thought has gone into planning a litter and it goes pear shaped. This was my friends first litter that she had carefully planned before she even bought her bitch - she'd researched the lines she wanted, done all the recommended health checks and a load more besides and tried to do everything right - then her poor girl had such a rotten time of it - there was only two pups anyway and one had got stuck coming out as he was big and the little bitch puppy was dead behind him - if they hadnt done the caeserian they would have all died without a doubt. It makes you so mad when people just shove any two dogs together and dont give a stuff and end up with a healthy litter and someone who does the right thing ends up with a load of hassle - but my friend is just soooooo grateful that she still has her girl and one gorgeous chunky boy - he's a right porker having the milk bar to himself

Re: Breeding Back To Back

Have done it once when we had a singleton. Other than that, I don't see me doing it again.

Obviously when the bitch misses we go again the next season but that isn't what back to back means!
