Help Help Help

I'm in need of some advice if anyone can help?

I have recently bought a miniture jack russell pup and not sure what to do about the breeding side of things. She was never bought to breed or make a profit from or anything like that.
The vet has told me the best thing to do is to have her spade as soon as she is old enough as terriers have a problem with cancerous cells developing in their womb when they have seasons.
Now I'm in a pickel because I would like to breed her to give her the experience before taking it away and also because I have never had a female dog before and I would like the experience!

I just don't have a clue what to do and what would be the best for her because it would be a first time for both of us and I wouldn't want to put her at risk by my inexperience!

Help please

xx

She doesn't need or will even want to experience breeding. It is a lot more strenuous than human pregnancy and there are a lot of risks involved - you could lose your bitch and if you bought her as a pet, then I would let her remain a pet and get her spayed.

Most female dogs do not get bred from and just because they are female it doesn't mean they need or should be bred from. If you would like the experience, I would recommend volunteering at a rescue. You will not only see what happens because of overbreeding or producing litters on a whim, but you will be quite likely to come across a pregnant bitch that has been sent to rescue and you could offer your help with that.

Re: Help Help Help

If shes a pup she won't even be ready to breed until 2 yrs so about 3 or 4 heat cycles. Then you would want to make sure any tests were done and check with her breeder on whether she is a good example of the breed ( as we all think ours are the bestest in the world) sometimes they are sold to pet homes as the breeder doesn't think they will be of the caliber to breed. TBH dogs don't care if they experience having babies. You need to do a lot of research on your breed and talk to the breeder she will be very honest with you I'm sure. And if you want to experience puppy births maybe talk to your breeder and she will video tape the next one for you....Jill

Like DT said dogs dont need the experience of a litter! and would it be fair to put your bitch through it so that you got some "experience"..A number of things can go wrong! I would take your vets advice and get her spayed! like you said you no nothing about breeding are you willing to risk your dogs life for an experience your she doesnt actually need?

Re: Help Help Help

if i were you i'd just enjoy your little dog and not put her through a pregnancy, my bitch she had to have an emergency ceasarian & my friend lost her 3yr old bullmastiff under aneasthetic just a few weeks before my bitch was due, so i was terrified, and if she had died because i'd put her through it i would never have forgiven myself, 4yrs on my friend is still guilt ridden for her bitches death, she also had 10 puppies to hand rear of which only 4 survived

Re: Help Help Help

Just get her spayed, she dosnt need the experience of having pups, neither do you, how would you handle if her pups are dead at birth, or have difficulties/deformities? what if you lost her during labour? what if she rejected the pups are you prepared to feed those pups every two hours night and day, can you afford a c section if she cannot give birth? can cost £1,000 depending if its out of hours or not, are you prepared to take back any pups that new owners decide they dont want anymore for various reasons? are you prepared for them to go into a rescue when rescues are already overcrowded? As you say she was never bought to breed from, your vet has given you advice re spaying to prevent cancer and yet you are prepared to ignor that to breed from her? a bitch should be over 2 years of age before breeding and should have all the relevant health test for that particular breed this in itself is expensive, its not just a quick once over at the vets its having proper test done, have a good think about it and realise the possibilities of having to sit there in the middle of the night with your pregant girl dead in your lap because you wanted her to experience having a litter.
