Re: thinking about getting a german shepard

My parents have always had shepards... they're very loyal and protective dogs.

You really need a firm hand and need to attend training classes as they can get very big and lively!

They love kids, and any memeber of the family. They are also very intellegent, need walking frequently and plenty of attention.

Just be aware that some of them can get hip displaycia so get one from a reputable breeder and ensure this problem isn't something the parents suffer from.

But generally, a well brought up and well trained German Shepard will prove to be a lovely pet and great with kids

Re: thinking about getting a german shepard

German shepherds are great dogs i had one up until 2 years ago when she passed away she was great with my children, my parents always had one when i was a young child, they also have one now and she is fantastic with my kids and they range in ages from toddler to almost teen and never a problem with her or them, as bee112 said training/puppy classes are a good idea but thats a good rule for all breeds

Re: thinking about getting a german shepard

hi

we have a gsd too, shes a great dog - couldnt ask for better - however she is 2 and is very lively, boistrous and demanding...... most of our time is taken up between her and our collie - our dogs get walked between 3 and 4 hours a day - every day..... please be aware the need much more walking / exercise than the dog you already have, they are also very loyal and protective. i trust mine completely with my 8yr old brother - but also please remember how big they grow - mine can put her paws on my shouldes when she stands - and im 5ft 6 (so not paricually short!!!) ours gets on great with other dogs.

with regards, if you get one make sure they are introduced slowly and give the other dog time to adjust to having a new pup around - as long as you introduce them slowly and carefully you shouldnt have problems (providing your current dog gets on with other dogs)

on the whole gsd's are great dogs and we'll never be without one - ever.......

Re: thinking about getting a german shepard

hi

i think thats a really good idea to take your current dog with you as then you will get a better idea about how they will get on - if you can maybe go a couple of times before taking the new pup home - also as i think someone else has said make sure you go to a retupable breeder as gsd's can have hip problems - you also want to make sure of the temperament.... meet parents if you can..... hope your search goes well...... keep us posted....
