Re: thinking about getting a german shepard

Hi we have kept german shepards for years at 1 stage we had 2 german shepards a cavalier king charles spaniel 2 mongrels and 9 cats, and they all got on brill. We took 1 on when i moved into my own house and my parents split up had got her at 6 weeks old but my dad coudnt have her so i took her on. She was brilliant with my eldest son who was born the following year never left his side slept at side of crib while he was in our room then between the 2 bedroom doors when he went in on his own. Trusted her 100 % with him he even used to chase her round in baby walker unfortunatly she was put to sleep as her back legs went on her but she was nearly 12.Not braved getting another 1 yet as even though its 8 years ago now still dont feel i could ever replace her . Alot of people said i should get rid of her when my son was born as that breed wasnt good with kids but personally i think its how a dog is treated by there owners rather than a certain breed any dog can be nasty if badly treated and shown nothing but agression.

Re: thinking about getting a german shepard

hi snowy, roony and patsy we have 2 small children and our dachshund is ok with them but she is still mouthing at the minute and they get her a bit excited but i do tell them to calm down and not her because its not her fault, but if and when we get a german shepherd it will be treated as part of our family just like our other dog. i agree with you about how any dog can be nasty if its treated badly.

I hope you find 1 soon and you get as much enjoyment out of her as we did ours. Post some pics when you pick the right one .

Re: thinking about getting a german shepard

Coming from my amazing experience of german shepards, with 1 day of it (and 5 visits to the blue cross) I can say it's best to introduce the kids to the dog after the dog gets to know you and have something to distract the GSD incase he/she gets out of hand.

If they're OK with each other then good. If you have young kids, always be in the same room as them and the dog. The more time they spend together, the less threat the GSD will be to you and your family.

As said above, German shepards are loyal and very protective dogs.

Re: thinking about getting a german shepard

the german shepard would need a lot more walking than the dachshund and that might become an issue, as in would you take them for seprate walks or together and then have to carry the dachshund?

My dad had a dachshund when he was growing up he said it was a nightmare when they went walking with other dogs as the dachsund would just sit down and wait for my dad to pick him up and carry him! I can just piture it now him back in the 70's with flares and long hair carring his mothers dachsund!!!!

well iknow this sounds daft but when i walk her at the minute i take my youngest child in his pram and when she gets tired she jumps in the back of the pram which is very spacious so the walking wouldnt really be a problem
