So what's the issue ?

Ok,
Recently I've been reading threads whereby breeders who have and are breeding are refusing to answer questions regarding there dogs and health issues - Why ?

What on earth is the big deal ?

As a breeder I have no problem with anyone and I mean anyone asking questions about my dogs,or the breed.

Re: So what's the issue ?

There shouldn't be a big deal Sal, people shouldn't be so defensive they are afterall easy enough questions to answer.

Re: So what's the issue ?

There shouldn't be an issue, but obviously there are people who aren't as approachable or responsible.

I had Indie spayed for two reasons, she'd had a cruciate rupture, and her elbow grades weren't as good as her sisters; I was getting conflicting advice about whether to breed from her or not, some people I knew said go ahead, and others said they wouldn't - her grade is a 2:1, so a 2 overall.

I stood back, thought about it, and decided as I had Tau who has perfect 0:0 for both hips and elbows, then I would be ill advised if I did continue the plan to breed from her, and had her spayed. The cost of health scoring for Indie was £400 approx, and I don't regret a penny of it, if faced with the same decision again I'd always spay. And if I didn't feel I could publicly post health scores, then I have something to hide and would question why I am breeding in the first place.

Re: So what's the issue ?

i think people should answer questions asked honestly, i think that if they are a responsible breeder then they should have nothing to hide.

for years a dreamt about being a fantastic breeder of working line GSD's -however after knowing about all of the dogs in rescue it totally changed my mind.

i could have easily bred Zara.

she is KC reg, she has been hip scored her hip score is a total of 15 (GSD's should be under 19) she has a good temperment, her sire and dam pluss generations back have also been hip scored etc.... etc...

but i decided against it -she got spayed 10 days ago.

so amny people tried to talk me into breeding her - but i am very stuborn and have my own views

I agree with Noushka. If you health test then just say so.

Re: So what's the issue ?

Having spend £100's health testing, I don't know anyone that isn't completely up front about it. I know of no one who has actually done health testing and isn't more than happy to offer the information readily - it does make me suspicous when people get defensive about it.

Exactly Noush..People that wont answer questions imo..Are hiding something..
After all breeding isnt just about having pups or following the welp..

No its about ALL the stuff in the middle from having the health tests done, searching for the best stud, mating your girl with the stud, ect

People seem to think its about having puppies and thats it..no one ever wants to talk about..What health tests they have had and what scores..why they thought the stud they choose to be the best ect..so if they are keeping that a secret then imo there is something that is being hiden.

If its all done the right way surely you are proud and want to "brag" about this wonderful stud you have found that matches your bitches pedigree and how wonderdul there health tests results are..
