I worked this out

And I really can't believe how much money it costs to wean a litter of puppies

Puppy milk x 4 a day =£1.60
Chicken minced fresh =£1.50
Tripe mince =£0.50
Beef mince =£0.50
News papers =£1.00
Washing machine bedding =£0.25

At least £5.35 a day for 6 weeks (first two weeks just extras spent on mum)

That totals £224.7 that is only calculating that things stay as they are right now but I am thinking that the pups appetite will only increase so it could work out at twice that much

I am sure I have forgotten stuff too

one of costs such as
Toys
Injections
Bedding
Puppy pen
Whelping box
Wormers

Exrtra food for mum while she is still feeding the pups = £2.00 a day

Noone in their right mind would breed because they think they can make money out of it lol

my pups are nearly 5 weeks old and I haven't been able to take any work as I can't leave them, they need constant attention lol

Re: I worked this out

I never used puppy milk, and bought a sack of dry puppy food to soak and fed tripe(which is cheap)and lasted the duration,as far as news papers went i would drive to the recycle containers and fill my car up!!so i didnt find it too bad

Re: I worked this out

We get news paper from recyling to.!
But we always have puppy milk in incase dams milk drys up or rejects a pup there no time to waste if you need to hand rear a couple of days old pups.!

We like to bring our pups up on the best possible food and that does not come cheap, also like you say injections arent cheap for a litter of pups as well as a trip to get mother and litter checked over.!
If every thing is done rightly you loss more money that you could gain imo

Re: I worked this out

This is exactly my point to my "friend" i don't know who managed to catch my thread "speechless" but i have a friend on there who wishes to breed for her uni fees!!!!!! she does NOT understand the whole process let alone fully undersatnd the cost of doing so, she is insane and irresponsible, if only everyone was as responsible and as prepaed as some o the breedrs on here!

good thread x

Re: I worked this out

Only £1 a day on newspapers! - one thing I have to say is you cannot possibly overestimate the amount of newspaper you need - I'd say you need you and your family and friends to collect for a year in advance to keep up especially if you have a large litter in bad weather.

I haven't even thought about adding it all up .... will have to at some point though

Hope everyone who breeds realises that although the taxman is kind it is 'income' and should really be declared ..... especially if you have more than one litter very occasionally.

Thanks Springer I am actually only adding up the cost of weaning them and I only have four lol it is going to work out really expensive but at the end of the day even those these boys were a suprise I wouldn't have missed this experience for the world.

If your friend could only realise the cost of rearing a litter take that from the price of the pups I bet most people don't make more than a few quid from each litter, bet it works out about 1p an hour LOL
