Puppies without mum

Hi,

I would like to ask a question to experienced breeders pls.
I have put a deposit down on pups when they were 2 weeks old, I am supposed to be going back at 6 weeks to choose the exact one.

I phoned the breeder to day to see how pups getting on. They are 4 weeks tomorrow. I asked about the mum and the breeder has told me that the mum isnt there now, she has gone to stay with a friend and she is exhauseted and losing hair.

To say I am concerned about this is an understatment!!!!!
The breeder tells me they are fully weaned so its ok.

Will this effect their temperaments and development???
Is this really ok to do???

Please help I dont know what to do now!!!!!

Re: Puppies without mum

Hmm don't know

the books say that although the mum isn't feeding them she is there to referee and teach manners once they are weaned
any chance you can go back to see them again to get a feel for what is going on?

I will keep our girl here all the time, she lives with me, she's mine so why would I send her away?

Over to more experienced people

I too would be concerned, even if no longer feeding them, there are things the mother should be teaching them.
Where did you find this breeder? It could be a dealer or puppy farmer.

Re: Puppies without mum

I would walk away. Even if the puppies are weaned the mum needs to teach and socialise them for another 4 weeks at least.

Re: Puppies without mum

i agree with everyone else that does not sound right to me...
Surely if the bitch was that stressed they wouldnt put her in a new home to get even more stressed..
Like the others have said did you see mum as you have to be careful that mum is what they say she is.

Re: Puppies without mum

I would never remove a Dam from its pups. They need to still learn from Mum and imo that reason she gave does not sound reasonable enough to remove a Mother Walk away

Re: Puppies without mum

Thank you all for the quick replies!!
I did see the mother with the pups when they were 2 weeks olds.
She let us near her pups and seemed friendly, she let us all stroke her and then she fed the pups.
She did seem a little thin but I just put that down to just giving birth etc.
If i walk away from this do you know if I would be entitled to my £100 deposit back??
Im really upset this has happened as we were so looking forward to getting our puppy in a few wekks time.
