Re: Puppies without mum

I dont know the answer to this one, if the mum was being made really poorly by the pups, I would have acted to save the mum too. I have to say that when Daisy was ill she only saw the pups a few times a day to nurse ( not that she had any milk) as anything more than that would have made her too weak.
She really isnt that interested in them even now - we think in part due to the rough start that she had - but as we have 3 other dogs as well we are sure that between them all the pups will get the skills that they need!

My friend has a St Bernards that was tragically orphaned at birth and the breeder took all the litter to the vets to be PTS, one of the regulars there took them on and hand reared them, and she is a sweetheart - madder than a box of frogs- but very very sweet.

Talk to the breeder, but as others have said, if the reasons dont add up or your instincts say trouble, then walk away.

Re: Puppies without mum

I don't know the circumstances for the breeder to decide they are weaned at four weeks but my bitch was half her weight when feeding her pups and I was worried but the vet said she was doing extremely well. I had them eating farleys rusks in milk at 5 weeks but they were by no means weaned as I used the proper puppy milk formula and they still had mummy to suckle on. Then they were gradually introduced to solid foods. One of my pups still chases his mum around and he is 11 weeks old now...so...I would be a bit suspicious if I was you.

Re: Puppies without mum

Hello everyone!
Just wanted to let you all know that I visited the breeder today. I went with my instinct and decided I had to walk away, so many red flags kept coming up.
But I was also told that the dam is critically ill and may not make it due to mastitis.
When asked if this was due to the fact she had been taken away from the litter too early, the reply was NO!!
I think that is the reason myself and now she may die. How terrible this whole situation is.
Oh and apparantly all boxer breeders take the dam away when the pups are 4 weeks, otherwise she wouldn't be able to cope. She has been doing this or 25 years!! Funny though I wasnt told all this when I went the first time!!

When I first decided started looking for a boxer, I thought it would be simple to find a good breeder. But 6 months down the line still looking!!
However I am travelling 150 miles on sunday to go visit another breeder who has a litter.
The bitch is 5 years old and this is her first litter. I have asked alot of questions, everything seems ok apart from the fact that she hasnt been heart tested but the sire has. Do you think this is a huge problem??
In answer to your question about the stud dog, they were surprised the litter had been weaned so early at 3 and half weeks, but I dont think they know about the dam being critically ill as yet!

I phoned the breeder to day to see how pups getting on. They are 4 weeks tomorrow. I asked about the mum and the breeder has told me that the mum isnt there now, she has gone to stay with a friend and she is exhauseted and losing hair.

To say I am concerned about this is an understatment!!!!!
The breeder tells me they are fully weaned so its ok.

Will this effect their temperaments and development???
Is this really ok to do???

Please help I dont know what to do now!!!!!

If i am honest i wouldn't touch these pups they aren't going to learn what they need to learn from mum and it does sound abit puppy farming like!

I haven't read your replys so sorry if i am jumping the gun here but if it was me i would ask for my despoit back as you are not happy with them not being with mum!
