help

i think my staffi may be pregnant
ellies last season finnished in the middle of january and my 15 year old step son started walking her as i had only recently been discharged from hospital with a brain heomorage.
recently she has put on a bit of weight and lost her shape her nipples have enlarged and are droopy. she has vomited a few times recently my partner noticed what looked like a clear looking jelly substance on the floor last week but thought nothing of it please help she is only 15 months old and a member of the family my vet is closed and has no out of hours number.
i never intended to bred ellie im hoping its a phantom pregnancy as finding good homes with responsible owners where we live would be hard staffis are seen as hard mans dog i got ellie because i love the bred so my partner and i would keep them myself i do not want to ad a few more dogs to the local animal shelter
any advice would be greatfully recived thank you.

Re: help

Usually it's around day 11 onwards a bitch can get caught,my calculations suggest that she would be near enough full term.

You need to book her an appointment asap with your vet,to confirm if she is pegnant and it sounds very much like she is.I recommend you get the book of the bitch, which is excellent.Do not leave her on her own at all now as if she does start to whelp, she may need help in delivering her puppies.

I suggest you make arrangements for her to be spayed asap,at 15 months it is an awful situation,as she is not mature enough to be having puppies in my opinion.

It may be a phantom, and I am hoping it is.
If she does go on to have pups how are you going to keep them all,I suggest you avertise them but be very careful who you sell them too,as you probably know the breed all to often end up in the wrong hands.

Please keep us updated and good luck.

Re: help

Everything you describe points to her not only being pregnant but probably not far off whelping!!

I work for rescue and if you need any help do give me a ring ok? 01268 466616 (Wagtails Rescue, Essex).

I'm presuming you haven't been in this position before either, so i am more than happy to take your angel in for you and deal with her whelping. I would also recommend that you rehome via rescue if you can. SBT are being PTS at an alarming rate of 50 a week and all rescues are full to the brim. There just aren't enough homes for the amount of Staffies being born!

I'm not judgemental (you'll know by my posts) and i understand that these things happen. My offer is there for you ok?

Best wishes, and give me a call if you need me.

Re: help

well i phoned the vets for an appointment and told them the situation and was told not to bother taking her and to let nature run its course as there is nothing thay can do. the vet ended the conversation with the words if there are no pups within a week its a phantom pregnancy.
all thay were concerned with was when would you like to book an appointment for ellie to be spayed.
i think i will change vets.

Re: help

hiya i would ring your vet back and tell him you are not asking for him to see her that you are actually telling him he will see her if she is not in welp at least it will put your mind at rest. hope she is not in welp but if she is best of luck with her and her babies.

Re: help

I agree with Esther on this one - he should see her anyway cos if its a phantom she may need medication to take her milk away. I'd be looking for a more understanding vet for one thing

Have you got anybody near you that does sheep scanning they are normally wonderful at scanning dogs as well and cheaper than the vets as a rule - we have ours scanned by a lady that does sheep scanning and she is fab!!!

But I agree I think I would be looking to change vets too
