Puppies Grandsire

Tonkory Palmerston at Fayken

This is my pups grandsire apparently but what does it all mean? Is 9:12 a good hip score? What do all the letters on the pedigree tree mean? If anyone can explain it to me it would be much appreciated.

He is a show champion because he has won at least 3 challenge certificates which can only be picked up at championship shows in the uk a challenge certificate means he was Best Dog on the day - have seen this dog in the flesh and he is ab fab - he is the one who was in a car that was stolen from a petrol station on the way home from a champ show last December!!

Anyhow to make him a full champion he has to do a working certificate now!

See he is also the breed record holder of 40 CCs that will take some beating

Thanks, apparently he's the highest achieving border collie of all time! Is 9:12 a good hip score?

Re: Puppies Grandsire

yeah it isnt bad at all to those of us who are used to the hip scoring problems it is probably about the average for a border collie to some breeds it would be awful but every breed has an average score and that is the average for the likes of a golden retriever will see if I can find out the average for a border collie!! What are the hip scores of the parents of your babe!

Re: Puppies Grandsire

Morning Alan, the BVA/kennel club breed mean score January 2006 for a BC/WSD is 13, (the number is a combination of both hips), the advice is quote "Breeders wishing to reduce the risk of hip dysplasia should choose stock with scores well below the breed mean scores"

Hi,
Its the total you add both together.

Re: Puppies Grandsire

ajshep the hip score you should be looking for is low and even i.e 3:3 unless of course a dog has sustained an injury which could give a reading of for example 3:15 which seems way off the mark but can be accounted for and therefore doesnt signify HD.
I have a friend with a Rott who got him from good hip scored parents and he has a combined score of over 50!!!! So the system isnt fool proof

Cheers, sounds like his grandsire had a pretty poor score then.

I was thinking about getting him hip scored and health tested when he's older and if he's got a good score, stud him to a good breeder that is interested in improving the breed.

I briefly discussed it with the breeder and they would be happy to lift the endorsement if I decided to breed him but I would only want to do it if it was beneficial to the breed.
