I know I shouldn't worry

but you do

My poor girl is quite distressed at the moment and can't settle down. I have had to take the vet bed out of her box and leave her with just newspaper as she is just digging and digging to make a place for her puppies and the vet bed was just going to bury them. I've covered over some of the box to make more of a den and the lights are off. The room is a constant 20C so not over warm although to look at her pant you would think it was (which is why I've got a thermometer in there).

I know she'll settle down but it is hard just to stand by and watch her distress and listen to it too, she's being a great mother but it's just hard to watch and not interfere with her. But you hear a squeal and automatically want to check all is OK

I have checked her temperature today, should do it again but she isn't settling to sleep so I can and it was normal this afternoon and as far as I can tell she hasn't got anything left inside, her discharge is normal and doesn't have a bad smell or colour (just smells like stale blood).

She is eating and drinking but not enough water I think.

The other dogs are seperated from her by two gates and a room so they aren't near her either.

just wanted some sympathy and if anyone has any ideas of how to help her settle I'd be grateful

Re: I know I shouldn't worry

This sounds pretty normal to me and to behonest theres not alot you can do, just leave her to it in the peace and quite and she should settle she may do this for a few night
Is she a first time mum.? As i find the first time mums are the ones that get more stressed and start digging alot!
I have full sympathy for you i know how hard it is to leave them and watch them when they are so frustrated..
Can you bitch get out of the box when ever she wants to??
take care

Re: I know I shouldn't worry

Might seem a daft question but do you have a pig rail/shelf in the box?

First time mum

Yep she can get in and out of the box and has access to one room that the others can't get in and unless she's very clever she can't hide her babies anywhere in the room.

Yes there are rails round the box she's in so hopefully the pups are OK round the edges.

I'm listening to loads of squeals from the back kitchen which seems to be just when they are hungry and need feeding

Sleepless night for me I think

One thing though she does want me around 'cos earlier today when I took the other dogs out for a walk (OH stayed home) I could hear her barking about it, she apparently settled down agian

I think your right a sleepless night for you and dont i know it too well lol
Hope you get some sleep though.
Yeah she will want you around most of the time she dont understand why your going out with the rest and leaving her lol
Its good that after a while she settles down though as it would be a problem if she was like this the whole time you was out
good luck take care kerry x

Re: I know I shouldn't worry

Thanks, I am sure she'll be Ok but you do worry especially when you read all the bad stories about bitches killing their babies.

All the info tells you about the puppies after birth but not too much about the bitches unless they are seriously ill

My poor baby, wish I could do something for her

Night, night off to my floor, book and torch

and hope things are better in the morning
