Question We might be having puppies - helpful advice please

There seem to be a few people who are playing the waiting game at the moment are we? aren't we? expecting puppies and for the first time too

So please can we get the useful info from people about:

1) good places to look for info - apart from 'the book of the bitch' which if I am any judge is the one everyone recommends and everyone has rushed out to buy

2) recommended things to buy for if we do have puppies on the way, I've seen huge long lists but really what do you need for a normal (we all hope) whelping

3) when people think the best day for a scan is - seem there is only a small window before you are too late

4) signs and symptoms while we are waiting to see if we are and then any other signs we need to watch for both if it is going right and also - sadly - if it is going wrong

5) thing we need to do for the bitch before whelping - like worming etc

6) anything else you experts recommend for us newbies at this game

Mentors are a good idea but I am saving mine up until I really need them - these are the questions we think of as we go along

Many thanks in advance from all of us who have been reading the books and are now waiting

Re: We might be having puppies

Excellent posting
Great starter questions for us as well.

We are day 28 so 4 days ahead of your girl, and to be honest 4 days ago it was still at the is she isn't she, sleepy etc like we'd already discussed.

Today though has both myself and my hubby thinking the scan will just confirm that she is

Her shape has changed, looks a little wider at the ribcage.
She has also been exceptionally sleepy today and off her food (normally she finishes a meal in the blink of a eye) today she has eaten her meals but no enthusiasm and took her a while as just picking at it.
From tomorrow we are going to add a meal but so she has 3 smaller rather than 2 larger meals.

She had a play in the garden with the others this afternoon but had to ease off quicker. And had no interest about going for a walk.

My friend said her's go a couple of days at this stage where they just slow down and go off food and can be sicky (she hasn't been sick)

Also the tissue round her bottom nipples has puffed a little.
Weve been keeping a close eye on her today, i just know im going to be a fussing mother hen from now on

My thanks also go to all those who help and offer advice to all us new time expectant nanny's

Plus please join in if you are also hopefully expecting your own litters

Re: We might be having puppies

15 days post mating here

Signs I normally look for are, going off food and nipples pinking up around 4 weeks, I have been able to feel the pups at around 24 days but not always

Will scan at 28 days, I use a fantastic sheep scanner that has always been 110% accurate

Info - Mentor, mentor oh and mentor There is a lot of info on the net, but I have a mentor and The Book of the Bitch (my bible)

Whelping list - Nutri drops, Dopram V (Would never whelp a litter without it) Heat pad, old newspapers, lots of old sheets and vet bed, KY Jelly, scissors, and a new reel of cotton, probably lots more but that's what I can remember off the top of my head

I worm from day 42 till 2 days post whelping with Panacur

Don't increase food at all, just feed a good quality puppy food from 49 days on

Sat here wondering what have I done But have Tashi on call if needed

Hi Rach
So the fact my little girl hasn't been keen to eat today is reasonably normal?

Re: We might be having puppies

Yes, all normal
But these girlies do have a way of tricking us, I have been convinced a bitch was in whelp only for her to be having a phantom

Re: We might be having puppies

Hi Rach
My other girl has had a phantom (though never been mated)
So i have kept in my mind that it can be ghost pups

But really would be shocked if this was...
Would also feel a little foolish

Will know soon

Hi Louise, thanks for your good luck message will keep everyone updated

Re: We might be having puppies

The scan was today

We are happy to announce we are expecting at least twins, but she thinks it was 3 but couldn't get a clear view, so better to say definately 2.

I have very clear scan photos of the 2 pups though and soooo HAPPY
