Im afraid im unable to advise you on this but im sure a member will be along shortly who will be able to. Just ignore any negative comments you may get on here trying to tell you not to breed. Personally i wish you all the best and hope it turns out well for you. Welcome to the forum.

KC registered? hip score, health tested, clear eyes you need to have all the tests that are for your breed.

Then you need to see if he is worthy of the breed. what i mean by this is he outstanding would he help make the breed better. if you can answer yes to all these then i would advertise him to stud. once he is a proven stud then you can charge more but for a first stud i would say £150 maybe £200. But you need to be honest with your answers and make sure he is fully health checked.

Good luck and i hope all goes well.

re: want to breed a dog

Basically it is something that cost a bit of money to start off with, you have to have your dog hip scored and elbow scored at a cost of around £250 for both, then the eye tests which are carried out annually at a cost of about £35+.

Also having his hips done at the age of three normal wear and tear are NOT taken into account, so they could not be at good as they would have been had you had them done when he was just a 12 month

After that you have to find someone who wants to use him, not always an easy task, as people tend to use known dogs from either the show world or working world.

If you decide to go ahead then good luck, but be prepared for being at the bitch owners beck and call when they are not sure when their bitches have come in season.

re: want to breed a dog

First of all u have to make sure ur dog is a good example of its breed...u could find this out either by showing ur dog or asking an experienced breeder (of course dog would have to be seen by the breeder).

Then u should health test ur dog for all the healths tests labs require.

Never stud ur dog to untested bitches as this could produce ill litters.

Hope that help a tiny bit, im sure someone else will help more

Surely as a Labrador breeder you'd be the best person to advise someone else interested in doing the same?

re: want to breed a dog

Health tests for labradors are:

Hip score
Elbow score
Eye tests (done annually)
Optigen test
CMN test

Personally, I would only expect any deterioration in hips at 3 years old if there was a problem, and if there is a problem he shouldn't be bred from anyway. As Tashi says, as you are providing a stud 'service' and bitch owners will expect you to help and advice them, you need extensive knowledge of breeding and how to recognise the bitch is ready.

PS - What breeding is your dog?
