Hi, I breed dogs and many of my breeder friends innoculate their own pups if and when they can get hold of the innoculations. I always take mine to the vet for their first jab, so they can have a thorough check over before sale. But would like to do second jabs if still here myself. I have read varying reports, some saying it is legal if they are your dogs in your care, others say only vets should do them. My husband is experienced at injections and the vet will happily give us medications to inject our own dogs if & when needed. ie: antibiotics, oxytoxin etc. So are happy about us doing this.Just wondered what everyone else does with their own dogs and pups.

My understanding is that it is illegal although not 100% sure. It is probably worth checking.

On the subject of vaccinations though, few breeders I know give their first innoculation. If done too soon, the natural immunity passed on from the mother can counteract the effect of the vaccine. In addition, there are several different makes of vaccine, and vets don't tend to have them all. If they do not have the one used for the first vaccine, they often insist on redoing them which IMO means they are overvaccinated.

I never get pups their first injection for that reason.I insist the new owners take pup to vets and have pup checked for health and 1st injection if satisfied.

It's illegal here in the UK, can be done in Ireland and you can get the well known vaccinations for around £5.00!!!

Someone in one of my breeds was done here in the UK a couple of years ago for self vaccinating I believe.

Dont do it and wouldnt do it, we dont vaccinate our pups before they go anyway I have a few times bought a pup in and they have had one innoculation only to find that it is a different one than is given in our vets and have had to start the vaccinations again, also if you do them yourself they would have no record card and no full check up

When I lived in South Africa I used to vaccinate all my dogs, cats and horses myself. I honestly don't know what the law is in this country, but I can't see my vet handing out vaccines to clients to vaccinate their pets themselves....

Im not talking about first vaccination, they always have that at the vets when they have their vet check before leaving us.Im talking about the second if they are still here at 10-12 weeks. The reason they have one at 10/12 weeks is so that they are covered by the second one if bitch immunity affects the first one, so saying that 8 weeks is too early isnt really the case. I think it is better to have their first ones done before leaving so at least they have some immunity when they go, and it doesnt have to be the same brand when they go for the second jab at a new vets.

I don't usually do it, but if there's a need I get the new owners to be to check that their vets have the same make, if they don't then no, the pup has to wait until they are in their new home, unless of course you are having to keep them for longer for some reason then my vet would do both.

our breeder for Lady had a vet friend do the first one. not sure where that stands legally???
