What Makes A Suitable Breeding Dog or Bitch?- Assignment

I'm currently working on a breeding assignment for college and it asks to explain what would make a suitable female or male? Can anyone give me any pointers? I'm centering it around Siberian Huskies ^.^

Raindog is an expert on huskies, hopefully they will be along soon to give specific advice.

As a more generalised thing, as I want a pup to compete in working trials, I would be looking for a pup from parents or lines that have proved themselves in the working field, not necesserily in my sport it could be working trials, but also sheep dog work or competitive obedience, I would also be looking for the sire and dam to have a reasonable level of drive, but not over the top.

I am sure people who require dogs for different purposes are looking for completely different things.

Ok! Here's my take on the question as regards Siberian Huskies.....

1. Temperament - Does the dog/bitch have an excellent temperament which is typical of the breed?

2. Conformation - Does the dog fit the breed standard in every respect? Has this been confirmed by success in the showring under judges who know and understand the breed standard?

3. Working attitude - Does the dog work well in harness over distance?

4. Health issues - Has the dog been hip-scored and is the score satisfactory (the breed average is 7). Has the dog been eye-tested and passed clear of conditions which may affect the breed - hereditary cataracts, glaucoma, PPM, PRA?

5. Reason for Breeding - Why is the breeder considering breeding the dog/bitch? Money should not be a consideration.

6. Pedigree - Is the dog KC registered? Is the dog's pedigree compatible with that of the bitch? Has the breeder researched the two lines and is confident that neither dog nor bitch are carrying health/temperament problems in their bloodlines?

I'm sure there is more, but it's late and I'm too tired to think any more.

Mick
