Dog mating problems

Hi, I need some advice from anyone who has experince in breeding.

I have a 10 year old very active virgin golden retreiver who we would like to have a pup from. We had a lovely 3 year old bitch round last night who was ready in her cylce. We thought things would just happen naturally but after a couple of hours we gave up. The bitch was showing all the signs she was ready and there was no aggression from either party . But my male didn't seem to know he should be mounting her but was very interested. He sniffed and went around her a lot but would not get on her in fact she was mounting him! We tried to lift him up a few times and he was trying but kept missing! She is only slighly smaller so I dont think height is an issue. The bitch is coming back around tonight for another go and I need some advice please. Should we just persevere?

P.s both hip scored and eyes tested.

Mark

Re: Dog mating problems

A 10 year old male going to stud for the first time?? Not impossible, but higly improbable!!

I understand that you want a pup - this is NOT a good reason to breed by itself!!

I hope the two dogs are a good match by phenotype and genotype and you have plenty of support from the breeders of both dogs.

And you know what, I could go on and on, but wont bother TBH!

If the dog doesnt want to mate, you cant force him. People think its all too easy, stick two dogs in the same room and nature takes over - I bloody wish!!

I trained my boys as to how to behave etc. as many others do too.

Perhaps you ought to give this up and go buy a puppy from a reputable breeder..........

Re: Dog mating problems

Completely agree with the above. It is very unlikely your oldie will mate, especially if she is a maiden?? Is your boys breeder prepared to lift his endorsements and happy for this to go ahead??

Re: Dog mating problems

It took Chester a week to get it right for his first time, luckily the bitch was a flirt and really wanted to be mated
