Due in a week or so, found her tied to male

My female Chihuahua who has recently turned 2 years old is around 1 week away from whelping, and I have just gone upstairs to find her tied to one of our male dogs. He has just turned 1.

We think he is the one that successfully mated with her (accidentally) around 8 weeks ago. She came out of season around 2 weeks later, or so we thought as both males had no interest in her, so we left her out of cage, only to find the same male tied again next day. They are the only 2 times we had seen them tied.

Is it normal and safe for them mate again so soon to whelping? Could this bring on whelping?

phoned my vet, he said its normal for dogs to mate although not is season, and said it would be fine, even though we told him he she late on in her gestation.

My wife, who's family have had lots of dogs in pup, have never had dog tying in when bitch not in season never mind in late pregnancy.

So you have an entire male living with an unspayed female , she gets pregnant (not unsurprisingly) , and now they have mated again

Re: Due in a week or so, found her tied to male

Well i would be asking your vet if there is any chance of infection at this late date. If she has started losing her muscous plug the cervix could be open.

if you had asked earlier many on here could have told you about the mismate shot and the pros and cons if this was an unwanted litter.

Re: Due in a week or so, found her tied to male

such a helpful bunch of people here

Just want to know if the health of my bitch and puppies are ok.

my issue is not that my bitch is pregnant, just never knew they could/would mate at this stage, and if it was safe/normal.

Don't want tut tut's of people. thats just pathetic, hiding behind you computer screens. if you have no proper answer to my question then don't bother.

probably get flamed or kicked off forum now. Ah well just wanted some friendly advise that too much to ask???

Re: Due in a week or so, found her tied to male

I wasn't being rude and told what I would be worried about. When my vet had to do an internal on my Lab they were worried about infection and they had taken all precautions hand sanitizing, gloves but like she said she had put her finger in there so it was an open tract.

Re: Due in a week or so, found her tied to male

None of us can tell you if she's alright - only your vet can check her over and talk about the risk of infection this late into her pregnancy.

No one has tutted, you did this to your girl, it's up to you to make sure she sees a vet if she needs it. Get your head out your backside, this isn't about you, it's about your bitch - start doing what's right by her and pay attention to your dogs!

Re: Due in a week or so, found her tied to male

Hi there, it is not usual for this to happen if she is not in season, my girls would likely take off a males head at this stage of pregnancy if they tried it on.
As for the welfare of the pups, can't comment sorry. Has she started losing her plug??

I am thinking that she must have smelt rather interesting to him for him to even attempt mounting her, which might suggest a surge of hormones as she is nearing birth or an infection.
I personally would get her checked out just in case and definitely keep him well away from her, she will not want him near her as she approaches labour and certainly not when she has her pups. HTH
