In heat?

This seems like a ridiculous question and I am almost hating to ask it. Our bitch is 13 months old She had her first season in September and had a litter of puppies 10 weeks ago. Is t remotely possible she is in season again already? Our dog is behaving very oddly towards her!

Thanks in anticipation

Re: In heat?

Brief answer, yes, it is HIGHLY likely she is in season again. They are approximately every 6 months, even when there is a pregnancy in between. Count back, 10 weeks since pregnancy, 9 weeks of pregnancy, 2 weeks of season before mating (all approximate) and you have 21 weeks, which is not far off 6 months.

If she was bred on her first season you will have no idea how long her cycle is, 5 months is very possible. You should keep your dog away from her at all times and make sure she doesn't get pregnant again. She is much too young to have had a litter, as she is still growing herself. She will not have had time to recover from her last pregnancy either. It really drains them, it's harder work for them than it is for us!

I think I answered the question...?

Re: In heat?

You bred your girl somewhere between 8 and 9 months? That's like letting a 10 year old child have a baby. She's just a baby herself for christs sake. I hope you put more care into finding good homes for her pups than you do into raising your little cash machine.

Re: In heat?

Yesit is very likely she is coming back into season, not all girls have 6 monthly seasons. Two of my shepherds have 4 monthly seasons and one had one at 9 months old and at 2 yrs old now has never had another since. They all vary so much.
Is she showing signs of coming into season?? Is she swollen or losing any blood??

Keep a very close eye on her and make sure she is seperated from your male, it sounds like she has already been through the mill having babies when she is still a baby herself. Speak to your vet about getting her spayed once this season is over.

Have you only just got her? Did you rescue her? If so, what have the rescue suggested - most require them to be spayed (although sadly not all )

Re: In heat?

Wow, that's young to have a litter
Who bred her?
My girl comes into season once a year, but that's because of her breed... She might be starting to come in to season.

Just out of curiosity though, what breed is she, and do you know who the dad is? I'm guessing you had her while she was pregnant?

My girls have all random patterns

The theory is that if a bunch of girls live together, they are supposed to "synch" - I wish they would with two entire males living in the house

Just one of mine is consistent, the others can vary between 4 and 15 months but yes, it is quite feasible that 10 weeks after a litter she could be coming into season again - make sure you keep your boy away from her - even if he isn't entire - the fact she's had a litter before might make her more of a willing conspirator (or of course the complete opposite).

Neutered dogs can still mate and tie with an in season bitch.
