Re: My new babies

Mum and Dad are gorgeous
Pups are so cute
Do you expect their colouring to change much as they grow?

If they have they arn't registered with the kc and the kc doesn't recommend any but after googling it's recommended that they should be tested against PRA.

Re: My new babies

They are lovely puppies, the colours will end up very similar to Mum and Dad, Dad i bred too and was quite dark as a puppy but has changed alot.

Nup your right no health tests for the Shih Tzu and dont worry you dont have to interrogate me over my breeding i do know what im doing and how it should be done.

Interesting, it's good to see they are a healthy breed overall then.

Just a question, not a bash. Have not decided not to pra test then? from what I was reading there has only been 2 uk confirmed Shih tzs with it so I guess it's still early days yet? I know it's not recommended by the kc but recommended by several shih tzu people.
we love bsh's likes this.

Re: My new babies

No its fine i don't mind people asking, I think with testing you could go on forever if its not a Test that needs doing ( if you get my drift ), Its always a hard decision to make but i do only breed from dogs that have a very long trackable history and the majority of my lines are from one kennel apart from Zeus's Mum who is out of 2 American Imports.

If i ever thought any test was necessary or recommended by the breed clubs then i would be the first to do them, i'm just pleased as you said that Shih Tzu do tend to be a very healthy breed as a whole.

Yes, that is true.

Thanks, that's interesting to know i'm still learning as much as I can x

The breed club website was not much good, it was last updated in '10

There wasn't much on PRA just that several other shih tzu owners posting about it x

But if there is no tests required for the breed, then how is the introduction of PRA "going on forever"

PRA causes total blindness, and can be an early or late onset disease - knowing the lines is not enough unless you are tracking every single dog bred because they won't all be health-tested - and no breeder is going to shout about their pups going blind.

Labs, are a very healthy breed just that their numbers outstrip every other breed by thousands to 1 and people do tend to hear about the bad incidences -

We really could say "we are going on forever" with 6 commonly used tests, another two that could be done, and probably around another 4 or 5 in the pipeline.

The assured Breeder scheme requires 2 mandated tests and two recommended tests, but why stick to the minimum when we know there are conditions that can be prevented without removing a single dog from the gene pool.

The beauty of PRA is it so easily preventable through testing and doesn't require the removal of a single worthy dog from the gene pool - but allowing it to happen can cause grief and sadness for the dogs and their owners

Last time I chatted with someone, it was more like another 11 in development, some for the same condition, just variants of, like epilepsy and cancer.

Apols to the OP for taking it slightly OT, hope the info gives you a bit more food for thought re testing.
