NO-ONE is asking them to become specialist breed advisors - it's not difficult to see the breadth of species and types within those species vets have to treat - even the brightest couldn't assimilate and regurgitate that knowledge at the drop of a hat - not to mention the fact that things are changing quite rapidly at present, probably moreso than ever before because of scientific advancements,

What however could be done is for them to have access to an online breeding website documenting the required health-tests for a breed - and it's not beyond the bounds of possibility for the BVA, AHT and the KC to organise this between them - then - when customers ask, they or their vet nurses could check.

With a few exceptions as we know, most of this information is out there, it just needs to be all drawn into a single place - and the people best placed to do this are those that are implementing and recording the test results.

Re: How to help make vets understand the importance of ethical breeding

I am very lucky with my vet - they operate 24/7 so they get a lot of breeders on their books and they are often in despair at what they do! They love it when I take my dogs and pups in and usually a good chat about what's new and what needs doing. I guess it helps that my main vet is a breeder herself & has imported dogs but they're very aware of health tests and keen to hear new tests etc for my breeds... they've long since stopped advising me about neutering but were happy to offer the 'ovaries removal only' option which I went for recently with Dizzy, a route I'll probably go down with any who get neutered in the future. My vets are small animal only so they are more specialised - they do include a referral vet as part of the set up which is very useful.
