I wonder if mandating KC registration for all puppies to be sold would help - if they are cross-breeds or unrecognised breeds then they use the activity register to enable tracking. There has been many debates over whether the KC should mandate health-tests, and whilst I used to be of the opinion they should - I have back-tracked a little through well presented arguments - plus - I don't personally think the KC (or any other body) should be dictating what results should and shouldn't be used. The KC would have a two tier 2 sides registration system - with health-tested pedigrees and crosses and non-health-tested pedigrees and crosses using the minimum health-tests as specified by the AB scheme - (for crosses - the health-tests required from both breeds). People wanting to do unusual / 3 way crosses for a specific work purpose would have to request permission from the KC - no more "jugadors" (don't ask!!! ) unless bred for a specific purpose and proven demand (I think it safe to say that Labradoodles, Cockerpoos, JRTs etc are here to stay) If such legislation was in place and widely disseminated / promoted, if would force PF to clean up their acts or pull out of the market. Campaign to advise puppy buyers that in addition to ensuring the pups are registered, they should always meet mum unless there is a veterinary certificate proving a justifiable reason for mum not being around. Advertisers would need to prove the litter is registered when advertising online - this shouldn't be difficult to do - Champdogs scrutinise puppy adverts and require you to input the registration details - they allow litter details to be placed once the bitch is confirmed in whelp (CD have a one month run up - so if you have a litter due in April, you can't post details until around a month before). The likes of the 'free' websites could easily add this as a mandatory requirement by stipulating a deadline date at which the advert will be deleted and reported if the information is not forthcoming. Newspapers advertisers would need to prove registration, few are likely to spend money advertising a litter in the papers beforehand. As for monitoring ads, the companies takjing the ads could enforce certain requirements for litter advertising with relatively minimal system changes - this would require less scrutiny from already hard pushed inspectors. I like the idea of microchipping puppies and do mine registering them in the new owners name and address before they leave. However, I do recognise there some small breed breeders are not happy about it being done so early - where this is the case, trackable chipping vouchers could be given to owners which have to be used within 'x' weeks or months - the chipping could even potentially cover off issues around dog licensing, because with a standardised chip it becomes a standardised central register -monitored properly few people would slip through the net. This monitoring and legislation would then allow inspectors to focus their attention on the commercial breeders and puppy farmers - just my thoughts for what they are worth I recognise that this only talks about breeders, and doesn't really deal with the rehoming market - but hopefully over time, it would lead to less rescues, less ex-breeding bitches, and hopefully more care from breeders when homing if they know they have some level of trackability on their pups. |

Re: anyone else get annoyed by ads like this?
makle me sick, I keep seeing the same women advertising a certain breed, saying that she is cutting down, lord knows how many dogs she must own then as she has 1-2 adverts up every week
The dogs she sells have always had 1 litter, some are registered some not and are alawys just 'coming into season' and £££ more then pups, some are pregnant to, I must admit I DID contact her in a weak moment to see if I could persuade her to let me mis-mate and neuter the dog, she said no as it was double the price as she was in pup and I could make 'xxx' per pup, I said its a cross etc etc anyway she kept the dog & had the pups and charged even more for the cross as it was christmas and all sold within days!! ![]() A few days ago I see a siberian husky up for stud for £700 no papers?!!? and a labradoodle that wanted TWO pups from the litter, PLUS a 700-1000 stud fee to use their dogs?!?! now That shocked me!! obviously in it to better the 'breed!!' ![]()
