thanks again!
most vets are clued up on it now thankfully , and most breeders print off the link i gave to new puppy owners.

Re: Mdr1

just a quick question about the mdr1 results as there is conflicting info out there.

if a dog has +/+ does this mean they do NOT have the gene and likewise if a dog is -/- they Do have the gene.

thank you for any advice.

Re: Mdr1

-/- means that at that gene location there are a pair of mutant alleles - making up the 'gene' that poses a risk for drug reaction.

+/+ means both of the alleles there are fine.

+/- means that there is one fine allele, and one that is mutant. Each allele can be passed on to the pups but each pup takes only one allele from each parent. In this case some will take the '+' allele, and others will take the '-' allele. Of course if carriers are bred the hope is that the '-' (mutant) allele is the one not passed along.

At some testing places the alleles are not identified like this at all. Lablokin seems to use the letters N/N - for noncarrier, N/MDR1 - for a carrier, and MDR1/MDR1 for a dog with two mutant alleles.

I understand that the posters on this thread might not need this detailed an explanation, but I've written it in case others are reading along.
