plz consider before breeding

My story starts with my kc reg shih tzu
We bought her many yrs ago now and the story is sometime ago. But i would thought i would share to show that its not always a happy ending.

So here goes.
Before we started we searched for a suitable play mate and travelled many miles to have them together. All tests was done tht you can possibly thonk of
Poppy was bred all went well with her pregnancy she was scanned and shown littl ofbundles of joy.
Time passed and labour begun. i sat up all night with her encouraging and helping her along the way.
5 puppies was born but we had a still born. I jimped imto actionr and luckily revived her my heart was racing.

a few days went by i was out at the local shops and recieved a call frm my daughter. She was in panic i instantly knew something was wrong.
poppy seemed drunk (eclampsia) but also fallen dwn the stairs i dropped the shopping and ran home. We then rushed poppy to vet where she recieved calcium injections.
But we had another problem she couldnt put her back leg dwn. It turned outthat she haf also fractured her leg whilst falling.

Because this was due to eclapsia the insurance would not cover it.

Poppy got by with difficulty but we helped as much as poss.
Time passed again to tome to ad our precious puppies.
Shockingly we was getting callers for our girls and they asked WHT AGE TO BREED.

obvs they wanted them for one reason to byb
now this rattled me up and still does when i hear abt it.

So we kept tia (still born) my father took another girl and i endorsed the papers to try and prevent the boys being used as stock.

Tia is tiny and now 2yrs old but sadly not had ot easy. Her eyes suffer from ulcers and has been under the knife 5 times now.
Poppy is still with us and is very happy with her daughter around
poppy only had the one litter and was spayed as soon as we could
Tia was also spayed during one of her operations

i thought i would share our story maybe if seen by anyone they may comsider it dont alwau to plan

Re: plz consider before breeding

A very risky business this breeding lark and a commitment for thirteen or more years
thanks for sharing, hopefully will make folk think twice before doing it themselves!

Re: plz consider before breeding

I am sorry to hear what you hxve been through, I too recently had a bad experience, maybe we should all put our experiences here to let new breeders-to be know what they are letting themselves in for.

I chose a stunning well bred stud dog to compliment my also well bred girl, with plans to get into showing a homebred girl.

Pregnancy was easy, had 2 scans both showing 3 pups, last scan showed 3 heartbeats, I had 3 excellent homes lined up without advertising. Was very excited.

The day came and she started to have the first, I saw some black mucus on the bed and knew something was wrong, the first was born mummified, must hxve died shortly after scan.

She stopped labour and rested for 6 hours with me sat by her side, after she started getting restless again it was clear she was struggling so went to vets.

My girl had a c section, which the vet made me pay 50% up front, luckily my girl and two pups survived, I took the three of them home after paying the balance of my £1220 vet bill.

One pup was struggling to suckle and wouldnt take the bottle, I could hear liquid in her lungs and it was coming out her nose, it was a cleft palate, poor little thing was strong but hungry and there was nothing I could do, I had to back to the vets and have her pts.

Both the pups I took home had a bent tail, again I think something happen to the bitch when the other pup died. I am keeping the remaining girl, but can't show her due to her tail.

It was heartbreaking, stressful, emotional for humans and my girl and very expensive.

Now I have been that close to losing my girl, I will not breed again.
