Was reading an article awhile back the Alizin is now given or can be with a closed pyometra now, so that all the toxin and pus can drain safely, and antibiotics given rather then go straight in and risk surgery with all the infection present. If they are using it then obvioust more testament to its safety over the old types I would have thought.

Re: Need help and advice!

Thankyou everyone for the advice given. I've taken down every number from all the vets within travelling distance of myself in Belfast and Newtonabbey and come monday morning myself and my OH will be calling each one to see if any of them will still give her the mismate. To those of you in Belfast, the vet I used was on the Antrim Road, yes he is old (though the more I think about it he doesn't seem too doddery now). I'm just extremely confused, he has always been awfully good to me regarding the dogs, even microchipping Simba for free when I brought Sacha to get hers done, but I am seriously doubting if he's in his right mind at the moment.
Thanks again for all the advice, and I shall keep you all posted

Re: Need help and advice!

Please do let us know how it goes- if none of them can there may be a few a little out of that radius that could do it...
Once you have made enough posts, could you please pm me the practise name? I can think if two practices on that road, and have considered using one of them for scans, but have heard bad things about the other, so would appreciate the info!

Re: Need help and advice!

Did you have any luck finding a more diligent vet over the last few days?

I can`t believe the advice that one gave you. He has no business treating any animals if that is his competency. I fear he was looking at the long term profits he could benefit from if your poor girl is pregnant & continues to have the pups

Re: Need help and advice!

So, Update.
I enquired about the mismate from two vets and both point blank refused me, said she was too far gone and that it could cause more problems. She went into labour on Friday 3rd February, showed no signs or made any noise whatsoever. The first pup (a boy was born at 4.6oz) and she continued to have another 3 pups afterwards, including a 5th bag which was closed but full of liquid and black and green stuff which the vet thinks may have been an early gestation pup that didn't take.
I had to deliver the pups myself, open the bags and cut the cords and I can safely say I will never ever put her or myself through that again. I did attempt to call an emergency vet out from the vets in cavehill during the labour but was told instead I'd have to bring her to a clinic in ballyclare and I don't drive, so that went out the window. She wouldn't even come round to assist.
Sacha wasn't feeding the pups or taking any real interest in them so I bought puppy formula and fed them for the first 24hours by myself, until she came round. I've continued to supplement every second feeding since as Sacha can only be bothered with them for short periods.
I took her to the vets on Sunday after the birth to check everything had been passed and to check the puppies themselves for birth defects. All healthy and 100% fine, weighed them every day for the first week, they'd almost tripled in weight by day 11.
They're now 32 days old and all thriving, lively wee things. Sacha is on a calcium supplement but is slowly gaining weight again and the pups are in the middle of being weaned as both vets advised me to wean them early. They have also been wormed along with Sacha, again.
Just thought I'd let everyone know that they all arrived safely.

You have done a wonderful job amid all this frustration, when all you wanted was what was best for your poor girl. I hope you find lovely homes of all these lucky puppies.

We want pictures, though. Can't get away without pictures

Re: Need help and advice!

This was taken Saturday morning a few hours after the last pup was born. Sacha was exhausted here and fed them for about half an hour before she got up and repeatedly moved away from them. After this I took over the feedings until she'd come round.

Taz (the third pup born) after being weighed on Sunday. I was worried about him because he was so quiet compared to the other pups but he proved me wrong very quickly and is now the second heaviest of the litter

From Left to Right, Tinga (girl), Trixie (girl) Taz (boy), and Toby (boy).
The size difference between Toby the first born and Tinga (the last born) was huge at this point, not only in weight but in bone structure in general, she built so finely compared to the other puppies. I assumed she'd be the weakest but is in fact the bravest and loudest pup of the lot.

Trixie, 3 days old after being weighed.

Simba, the daddy, taking over washing the 4day old pups. Sacha kept forgetting to clean them after the feedings so Simba took over. For such a boistrous dog he has been so gentle with all of them, and I'm aware I'm very lucky that he took to them at all.

Puppies at 11 days old, from left to right - Toby, Tinga, Taz and Trixie.
