Breeding with another bitch in house

We are thinking letting Amber have another litter this year....all health checks in place and will be 2 years since her last. Thing is we kept a pup from last litter and not sure what you do when you have another bitch in the house when you have a pregnant bitch and what you do during and after whelping.

They also like their little plays which can sometimes seem quite rough although they never hurt each other. How do you prevent this if Amber is pregnant.

Thanks folks.

Re: Breeding with another bitch in house

I allow mine to carry on as normal for pregnancy. Mine are not allowed to play too rough in the house anyway, I just don't like it

My bitch allowed her daughter to see the litter at 2 days, but she would not set foot in the whelping box. by day 8 she was encouraging her daughter to help clean the pups.

My male dog is terrified of small squeakers so never went near until they started to approach him.

Brooke is very careful when pregnant, will not play much and just took to sleeping alot, Zanna just seemed to accept it.

Walks continued as normal right through, she just chose to stick close to me , and resumed her walks when her pups were 3 days old.

She had her first day out on the shoot last Saturday pups are 12 weeks.

All in all, Brooke pretty much set the rules, I supported her decisions.

Re: Breeding with another bitch in house

I've got four bitches in my house including a daughter and grand-daughter of my eldest girl - have never had a problem.

I have found that pretty much as soon as they've been mated, bizarrely, my girls have pulled back from any rough play - so not had any issues there.

As far as the other dogs and the babies go, I am governed totally by what mum finds acceptable - my eldest went to find our other bitch before the babies were 2 days old and used to allow her to lay on the settee overlooking the whelping box - they seemed to know instinctively what was, and what wasn't acceptable.

Otherwise, life goes on as normal, if they are shown, I continue to show until around 5 weeks.

It's one of the few times in our house when a dog is allowed to rule the roost (not sure my OH would agree )

I've found that apart from feeds - life pretty much returns to 'normal' by the time the babies are four weeks old, my eldest continued to feed until the last but one pup left - her daughter OTOH stopped feeding by the time they were 4 weeks and was quite happy for her mum and sister to go and see the babies if they were making a noise

Re: Breeding with another bitch in house

Just wondered, as the replies above seem to be about related bitches, is it the same for unrelated ones? I'm planning on (probably) breeding Kite, but have an older unrelated bitch, Ziggy. I'm sure Kite would make any feelings about wanting Ziggy to keep away quite clear, though she is very fond of her.

Nope - not all related

My first litter I had two completely unrelated bitches and no problems whatsoever

My second litter I had a daughter (and the unrelated bitch) - and my third litter was from the daughter, so had mother, another daughter and of course, the unrelated bitch.

It was my boy who caused the biggest headache (in the nicest possible way bless him) he wanted to jump in the whelping box / puppy pen and play - so had to keep him out of the way for the duration he's an 8 week old pupster in a 3 year old's body (they do say boys never grow up and that seems to apply just as much to dogs as it does to humans )
