Please help!

Hi
My bitch was covered around 5 times from the 5-9 November, so is expecting any time now.
Trouble is, i cannot see, or feel any pups at all.
We have milk, she is nesting, her belly hair is falling out, so all the signs are there.
Can all these signs still be there with a phantom ?
I have not had her scanned, but will take her tommorow i think, i just wondered if anyone on here may dispense some sound advice before hand!
Tanks in advance for any answers

Re: Please help!

It maybe a phantom pregnacy.

Take her to the vets to be sure, i have not worked out your dates but you should be able to feel them moving for the last few weeks (you can in my breed, your breed may be different, I'm no expert!)

Re: Please help!

You can get all those symptoms with a phantom. Does she look visably larger?

Only way to tell for certain is the vet as you say..so definately take her tomorrow as they would be due anytime now..keep a close eye on her until then to be safe. My girl had a small litter of 3 last year and could still by this stage see / feel movement.

Re: Please help!

your girl would be day 64/65 now if pregnant, my friends was mated on 3rd nov and had pups on 1st jan, has your girl gained weight at all? what type of dog is she as some can hide pups well although i would have thought movement would have been felt x

No, she doesn't look any larger at all, this is why i think she maybe having a phantom. I just wasn't sure if milk was produced if there was no actual pregnancy, so you have answered my question

Re: Please help!

I would definitely get her scanned to ensure she doesn't have just one or two pups in there - in a breed of that size, it is quite feasible you wouldn't see / feel the pups moving if it was a small litter.

did she have 5 ties? that seems rather a lot or were they slip matings or a mixture of both?

Bitches can produce milk on a phantom and some also gain weight / nest etc and believe me when I say they can be sufficiently bad to convince you they are pregnant even when you know there is no way they could be.

But given the number of times she was mated, I definitely wouldn't be taking any chances.

Re: Please help!

Get her scanned asap. There may be just one (easily missed in a sibe) and from that can arise numerous problems, the greatest being not enough oxytocin will be produced to start labour and the pup dying inutero, nectotise and cause a massive infection.
There is also a risk that the puppy will have grown too large to deliver naturally and so a c sec may need to be performed.

There is only one thing that separates the symptom of a phantom from a true pregnency and that is the presence of relaxin in the blood. All the symtoms are exactly the same for a phantom and true.

When one of my friends girls was having a small litter (akita having three) she didn't look any different at all- but felt heavier, if it wasn't for taking her to get scanned and weighed there would have been no real signs of pregnancy at all- and he'd milk didn't even let down until the pups were born...
Let us know what the vet says; All the best!

Re: Please help!

Ember had a very convincing phantom, even though she was scanned and had no puppies I was still worried until after her due date!
