progesterone testing

Hi I'm just after a little information really about progesterone testing..
So ideally you send off for a kit before you bitch comes into season.. Once in season which day would you reccomend taking her to the vets to have blood taken. Then you send in the post (royal mail?) Also where is the nearest idexx lab to me does anyone know? I'm in Nottingham in the east midlands..

So they have received the blood.. The test and phone you..?

''Roughly'' how much would we be talking if a bitch needed 2 tests carried out.. Think I'm definatly going to use this method in the future.

Thanks

Re: progesterone testing

The Idexx lab is in Wetherby.

The normal way of doing it would be:
  • A week before she is due in season, ring idexx and ask for a kit
  • Once in season decide which day to test (normal bitch would I would say begin testing on day 10- if previously had problems or this is last chance start earlier, maybe day 6 or 7)
  • To test, you ring and book an appointment with the vet for that day (6, 7 or 10). It will likely mean that you have to ring up on day 1 of season to guarantee an appointment. Book the appointment for as early as possible in day.
  • In most cases, the vets couriers come in the morning (hence booking an early appointment) and will be delivering other samples to Idexx (they do other testing too). If the vets aren't organising courier service, send it in a padded envelope by special delivery (for arrival on the following day)
  • Idexx will receive the blood the day after the blood is drawn, they will test it and normally ring you by midday. They will advise whether a retest is needed or when to go to the stud.
  • If you drop it off at idexx yourself after its been drawn, they will normally give you result there and then (its not a particularly long journey from Notts)

2 tests will cost you £50 + the price of a blood draw. Some vets will allow you to book a vet nurse appointment which are cheaper appointments than with an actual vet.... Often being a difference of a £7 blood draw and a £30 blood draw
archielee and Lumikoira like this.

Re: progesterone testing

I'm on the verge of doing this with Tau, I'll be driving the bloods up to Wetherby myself, not far off the A1, and not too long a drive for me thankfully. Idexx say they will get the results for you the day they receive the sample, so much better to deliver the bloods than rely on post for me.

I've no idea what vets charge for bloods being drawn, it's not an issue for me, but good luck with your girl.
