Facebook Frustrations

Sorry, but I have to have a bit of a whinge to someone, and I think you guys will understand....

I belong to a few FB groups for various things including pets and animals. All of these seem to be well intentioned groups, but I'm finding myself getting increasingly frustrated and angry at the amount of puppies (and other animals) being advertised and sold through this means. Its clear that the vast majority haven't had any kind of health checks and are just trying to make a quick buck.

Breeding is going to turn into an epidemic if people find it this easy to advertise and sell their pets. It really concerns me. I know its already easy enough with the likes of Preloved and Gumtree but to me, FB just adds a whole different spin on things. I would love to see the sale of animals banned through FB. What do you think?

Another trend that I am noticing is people asking the groups for pet health advice where they should be seeking professional advice. I try and do my bit telling them to contact their vet but just feel like the serious kid in the playground being drowned out by all the over excited children!

Re: Facebook Frustrations

I agree, I would like to see these awful pages shut down, I don't think many of the people who post on them have good intentions at all, but are greedy & unethical. I am pretty much universally hated on my local one, with about 4 or 5 of us out of over 1500 members trying to get people to listen

I honestly don't think it will be too long before I am hated, and probably kicked out!

Re: Facebook Frustrations

Yes, I totally agree

It worries me when I read things like 'My dog is biting my children and drawing blood' and they get answers like 'Its just a dominance problem, you need to roll the dog on its back and hold it there for 1 minute'. Or questions like 'Do you think I should try my dog at hog hunting?'

Re: Facebook Frustrations

I guess I shouldn't really be commenting on this thread as, if it wasn't for FB - I probably wouldn't have my youngest boy I think the context of how I got him is slightly different to what you are talking about - and my boy is from proven and health tested parents

It doesn't help when the papers have printed articles showing dog breeding to be something that can make money - which is inevitably going to see a spurt in the number of BYB

Re: Facebook Frustrations

Facebook can be a blessing or a curse.

I constantly see folk selling dogs/cats to anyone and giving rubbish excuses but at the same time one group I am in is for an exotic animal/pet and that group is used to give advice to new owners/existing owners as well as breeders using it to advertise any litters. Many good breeders sell on there and the group is there after if the owner needs advice/information.

I think it depends on how its used.

You will get some idiots and some who are genuine and do care where their dog/cat is going.

Re: Facebook Frustrations

Can't stand FB myself, find it full of boring comments about peoples boring lives even though I have tried to persevere add to that the selling and swapping of animals on there and it just winds me up even more.

This kind of thing shouldn't be allowed but then I don't agree with advertising animals in general and not paying for it, makes it all too easy - something which the sistership of this forum is also guilty of!

Re: Facebook Frustrations

i agree with all the comments ,there are people out there just wanting to make a quick buck as it were with no regard to the welfare of the bitch and her pups or to the familes they go to , my self i have a black lab that i got from a rescue centre many years ago and u could not ask for a better dog and our newest addition is a GSD bitch that we got from a breader who,s intrest is in the dogs their welfare and where they are going to none of this breading as soon as they are in season just so they can see the £££££££ pop up in front of their eyes as they see a bitch as nothing more than a cash cow

Re: Facebook Frustrations

so sad seems that more & more people are just 'breeding' these days, the amount of crosses im seeing is unreal, some are 3 - 4 crosses and going for £500-800!? each?! 4 crosses!!

what about a petition? im going to do one in a few weeks about neutering and selling kittens under 12weeks of age, im hoping that if it does go through that people will be put off as the people who tend to 'profit' get rid of kittens at 5-8weeks of age, so if its brought up to 12weeks with vet check & vacs...no profit!!

got to do something, even if its small steps at christmas i see a 6week old chi in pets at home and a 5week old lab, surely that is wayyyyyyyy to young! I thought it was 8-12weeks! 'breeder needed them to go early' always a excuses *sigh*

Re: Facebook Frustrations

i agree with taylorbaby a petion might be a good idea to try and crub these stupid people i wont call them breaders because they are not they just after that qucik buck , i remember when i younger u had two types of dogs a Pedegree or a Mongrol now it seems that there are some people out there selling a dog that has been crossed many times with other breads and then charging stupid amounts for them and giving using parts of the name of each bread to make it sound all exciting to get rid of them early
