Question How many dogs go over 'day 63'?

I know 'day 63' is just a text book figure of sorts, but I just wondered how many dogs have gone over day 63?

My other girl has had 3 litters (now retired) she had all 3 litters on day 60 or 59 from first day of mating (she either had 2 or 3 matings)

Now its her daughters turn she is due 22nd or 24th Dec (63 days from first and second mating) and as its her first litter it will be different from her mums.

Now as day 63 on the second mating is Christmas Eve, there may not be much help online (I have checked out my out of hours vet and printed out the directions to the surgery) How far over 'day 63' do you go before worrying!? Just being cautious

Re: How many dogs go over 'day 63'?

The 63 days is actually believed to be from ovulation, so dependent on when mating took place if they seem to be early or late.

It is easy to go over if mated early, and for pups to come early if mated after ovulation. It can not be an exact science as we only have progesterone tests to give us the best idea when ovulation is occurring ( or likely to be) To confuse it further they ovulate over 12-24 hr period I believe.

My bitch went 58 days from first mating, and on her second litter 61 days from first mating. I had my excellent ovulation detector telling me go for a few days before we actually went, and after missing twice she went on to have 2 healthy litters.

Not many, is the answer, and if they do then there's often something wrong, usually with the calculation of dates. I've only ever had one go over, and I knew there weren't many pups there - I let her go to day 65 then sectioned her. It was a singleton, and she wouldn't have gone into labour if you'd put a bomb under her

I'd never let a bitch go further than day 66, at the very latest, and I'd be much happier with sectioning at 48 hours overdue if no labour was apparent.

Many bitches go early, and day 60 is quite common in my breed

Rosie went over by 1 day, and all 8 were fine and delivered safely, and definitely had the right dates

I've never had any of mine go over 63 days - in fact most have whelped on the night of day 62 or morning of day 63

Re: How many dogs go over 'day 63'?

Our last litter was born on day 68/65, I was nearly having 'kittens' let alone pups, never had one go over before I was a complete paranoid wreck, mum was booked in for a section on the Monday at 9am, she whelped naturally early hours of that same Monday morning started at 1am, I guess she decided she didn't want a c-section after all.
