gloopy mucus & season
I have recently rescued a Rottie named Brook (a week ago) and it was clear she was in season almost as soon as she was brought into my home as my male unneutered dog Chaos & Brook began to flirt and Chaos then quickly jumped on her. We got him off straight away and they have been separated since. Her season to me seems to be all over the place, I expect because she had been neglected and not fed properly. see my other thread Ww have Brook Back. I'm so very happy but sad & angry at the same time
I'm not sure what stage she is in her season as at first Chaos was whining loads and desperately trying to get to her, it all then has became quiet on Chaos part and he's not really acting any differently now (he's still separated from her between two room though) She then had a bit of bright red blood spotting which I noticed. Only lasted a few hours and her vulva has become bigger so am I right in thinking this is actually now the start of her season and not before when Chaos was going crazy? A week on and she is still swollen and has a thick gooey mucus coming from her. Can someone tell me if this is normal as don't remember this happening with Holly when she had seasons. I'm probably just worrying over nothing but after reading so many different stories of pyo I want to know if this is normal or should I be concerned. She is due another check up at the vets later this afternoon but just want to know now really if everything is normal.

Re: gloopy mucus & season
I don't want to frighten you, but If this is a white stringy mucus - then I would take her to the vet ASAP - visible white stringy mucus is usually a very early (and very often easily missed) sign that a bitch has been mated and has caught.

Re: gloopy mucus & season
Hi, Thanks. It's odd because only a couple of weeks ago me & my oh were talking about Brook and how we missed having her around and then suddenly she is here. When we were asked if we would take her it was an instant yes, didn't have to think twice. Admittedly our house is probably a little too small for 4 dogs but they are pretty inactive indoors anyway and we go on several long walks a day with them and she is certainly a lot better off here than with him. I'm not sure what would of happened to her if we did not take her as I personally couldnt see him handing her in to a rescue like he said he would because of the state she was in. A week on and you can already see the difference in her weight. Ill upload another pic a bit later to my other thread so people can follow her progress if they wish.
She may have got caught by another dog, but from what we were told I think the other dogs she was with were also female and as she didnt come to us with a lead, food bowl, nothing actually other than the chain around her neck I don't think she would of got caught on a walk as I doubt she has even had one. We will be getting her spayed as soon as the vet says its ok to do so, Even if she is pregnant. I know that may sound horrible but we don't want any puppies and tbh I don't think she could cope shes only a baby herself at 18 months old & her condition is awful. and im well aware of things that can go wrong for her so she will be spayed as soon as we can do it. Our Vet is asking us to bring her in weekly to monitor her weight gain etc so i'm sure he will tell us when the right time is that we can do it.

Re: gloopy mucus & season
It wasn't white as such. sort of between white and clear (sorry not to great at describing) but it was stringy. I'm seeing the vet later at 2pm

Re: gloopy mucus & season
Hopefully you will just find out its her season, i was told that they can get clear discharge instead of the spotting blood & with the swelling it prob getting close to her time for mating. Your boy was prob just wooing her for when the time is right & you'll find that she will be far worse than him in eagerness
![]() Good luck at the vets. |

Re: gloopy mucus & season
i'm not sure how many people will have heard of this happening before, but one of my girls (who has a season every 12-13 months) last time went into season, out of season, then straight back in ready to stand within a day or so... only a handful of others i know have heard of this happening before, and she does like to be difficult and bothersome, so maybe brook is the same!?
i think your taking the best approach where chaos is concerned- the better safe than sorry route!!! i cant remember whether i commented on your 'we got brook back' thread, but in case not, congrats to all of you for getting reunited!!!!! i'm sure she'll realise she's safe and home soon!

Quote:
I can remember seeing it on the first girl I ever mated and contacting all my mentors for reassurance - the response was the same from all of them - she's pregnant - a good few weeks later she delivered me 8 beautiful (intentional) puppies - obviously totally understand this is a situation you wish to avoid. I don't know the whole story - but some bitches can catch very early in their season, others towards the middle and some very late - it sounds like she is a lucky girl to be with you. What did the vet say? |

Re: gloopy mucus & season
Hi thanks for your replies. The vet is very happy with her weight gain but has now told me to give her meals further apart. She was having small meals every 4 hours but he said to try and increase it to every 6 hours and just add a little more to these meals.
I described the discharge and he said it's unlikely she would be pregnant because of her weight Even I know underweight dogs can get pregnant, Ive seen it on TV. He said he thought it was more likely to be the beginning of oestrus as discharge like that is often seen then but he wouldn't rule out pregnancy. I said If she was pregnant I wouldn't want her to have the puppies, I told him my concerns and he agreed saying a spay would be best. I asked about the mismate but he said if I was getting her spayed anyway there really isn't any point in the mismate. He said the spay is only £50 more than the mismate and with her being thin he didn't want to risk anything with the injection. He said he can perform the spay no later than 6 weeks from now, After that he would advise to carry on with the pregnancy. He thinks she will be at a good enough weight in about 3 or 4 weeks so will be booking her in hopefully then. I hope I'm making the right decision. I feel a bit bad putting her through a spay so soon after coming to us but imo I think having puppies would be worse and if she is pregnant I haven't a clue what the male is. The Vet seems pretty sure she isn't though and that she is just in season. I asked about the dangers of having a spay so soon after a season as usually I know your supose to do a spay inbetween but he said even though there was a slightly higher risk of something going wrong it's still pretty safe for them to do and said he wouldn't agree to doing something if he thought he was putting someones pet at risk.
