I do find the vets idea of spaying instead of mismate a bit odd.... am I the only one?

Regardless of cost I think if I were in your position, I would get the vet to do the mismate now and if she's in such bad condition allow her to settle in with you and feel comfortable before going for the spaying at the appropriate time in her cycle.

I understand it may not be possible for you but just my opinion, do let us know how you get on, good luck xx

I find a lot of suggestions and ideas vets have around breeding / neutering to be a little odd if I am honest and not a massive amount of joined up thinking either from area to area and surgery to surgery

Hey ho - they are the ones that have spent 7 years training and have the experience I guess - they don't specialise in any particular species, but am guessing they see more dogs than anything else.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do

Thank you for your comment. I understand vets don't always know best but I think he doesn't want to do the mismate because of how thin she is. She really is in a bad way. From above you can see her rib cage very easily and all her other bones although she does look a bit better than from last week. I'm interested in what others think as well. Please comment as I will then print this Thread and take it to the vet to show what others on here think and then see what he says. I want to do whats best for her and not to put her health at anymore risk. I was thinking only last night surely a mismate would be better if she is pregnant as where she is emaciated surely any growing pups would be taking the nutrients that she needs to be getting better.

The cost does not bother me. I'm not rich but I have enough money put in a saving account for emergancies for my Animals should I need it as even though my pets are insured I know certain things such as dental work may not be covered. So I don't mind paying out for a mismate and then a spay if that is the best thing.
