Advice Please

Hi I have a 2.5 year old staffy (Jess) who is my baby. She has had 3 seasons followed by Phantom pregnancies.
After she had her second season I took her to the vet for advice. He told me that due to her Phantom pregnancy it would be better for her to have a litter of pups and then have her spayed.

Needless to say, I was quite shocked at this, left the vets and Jess has just had her 3rd season. (I did NOT mate her!!) Again the phantom pregnancy started so I took her back to the vets (saw a lady vet this time) who advised I have her spayed in 3 months time.

My question is this - Has anybody had contradictory advice like this before? I am VERY aware of the Staffy situation in the pounds etc and it is NOT my intention to make money etc.... I just want what is best for my girl.

Has anybody come across this before?

Re: Advice Please

Its better to get her spayed, she doesnt need to have a litter no dog needs to

it doesnt surprise me that some vets still advise it as its £££ to them most of the time, if she was to need a section you could be looking at over £1k!

Re: Advice Please

What ridiculous advice for any vet to be giving mad:
Please get your girl spayed, their is honestly no good reason for her to have a litter of puppies and you would be risking your girl by trying

Re: Advice Please

Load of rubbish - I'd change vets!

If she is getting phantoms then spaying would be best anyway.

Re: Advice Please

Personally i'd let him know how irresponsible his advice is to his face as he will carry on telling other people the same crap, then I would change vets I bet he also tells people how good Hills Science Plan is too, sounds like a right money grabber!

Re: Advice Please

Both the vets I saw are from the same practice. What confused me is when I told the second female vet what the first male vet said - she kind of backtracked and said that although her colleague isn't wrong, it is personal choice.

Re: Advice Please

i'll never understand why vets suggest mating a bitch before spaying? What for? Does the world need more dogs in rescues (i'm not suggesting you would actually put pups in rescues but you know what i'm getting at -there are a lot of stupid idiots around the world) I'd change vets if i were you!
