Re: Using my dog at Stud dog?
No idea Dexter, but just wanted to say I wish you all the best, I know how much work you put into your dogs. I do know it's not an easy decision to make and after chatting to a number of folk who stand dogs at stud, it's certainly not an easy task, and you seem to be eligible to pick up the flack for any resulting problems.

The bitch normally comes to the dog, but I guess if you have nowhere 'private' away from the others to do the mating, and somewhere private and quiet for the dog to rest afterwards, it may well be prudent to consider going to the bitch - its up to you and the bitch owner to sort out between you. I dont see anything 'wrong' with you taking the male to the bitch, I just know its not the 'norm'. As for Stud fees, my understanding is, it varies from breed to breed and person to person too. When we have used a male, we have always on paid production of pups. Only once did we pay 50 quid up-front, as a 'handling' fee. We have never had a stud owner with a stud dog contract either, nor have we ever used one - but some people do, it might be something you wanna think about too. In my experience, people seem to charge a little less for a first mating, then they may put the fee up after the dog has produced pups the first time - again, I think it depends on the individual and what is seen as the 'norm' in that breed.

Re: Using my dog at Stud dog?
ok ta x
he is pretty laid back to the other 2 lol so hope he stays that way. My old boy was used 20 years ago and he was just the same after he'd been used but then he was the only male i had in those days. re; stud , yes i thought i'd charge a reduced fee as they had been pestering to use him since he was 4 mths old. The bitch owner is an AB so all health tests done (so has my boy! before anyone asks)and as the bitch is not a maiden seems ideal. this is a whole new dimension for me lol , with my old boy an experienced friend helped me out. i got the snappy end.

Re: Using my dog at Stud dog?
For what it's worth, all of the stud dog owners I know, have various dogs, some used, some not, and they *generally* get on. I expect that can differ within different breeds, some will be more laid back than others.
I don't know about an initial stud fee, but with Labs a free return is offered if the bitch doesn't take as norm, but the stud fee is paid up front. Also, with show dogs, a second visit is usually the norm, not so much with working bred dogs, from what I've heard of different stud dog services. |

Re: Using my dog at Stud dog?
I was given a tip about unproven stud dogs - no stud fee to change hands on the first litter until the bitch is confirmed in whelp - then hand all the paperwork over.
I wish you luck - my boy is three (and yes, Fully health tested before anyone asks) and we have been trying to mate with a health tested bitch for the last couple of days - it would be hilarious if it wasn't so frustrating - we've even shipped in an experienced stud handler to help - the bitch is rampant - I've honestly never seen anything like it - she backs him into corners - when he's had enough she starts sniffing his bits and huimping him - my boy knows exactly what he needs to do - but we just cannot get a tie - we have one final visit tonight to see if the bitch is still "fresh" and then from there we just have to wait - but what an interesting journey it's been Neither dog is particularly keen on human interference - which can make life difficult !!! Temperament wise it is early days if you want to include the tie - but he's still the same laid back dude he was beforehand - and when he's had enough starts playing with the ball or the teddy ![]() |
