If I ever come across a bitch in season I'll have to test the theory out
- you will be surprised how many newbies can "get the wrong end" left to their own devices

Good luck with your stud Out of curiosity, in your breed Dexter - how much is the average stud fee? Also what would happen if for example the bitches' owner told you she wasn't in whelp eventhough she was and didn't pay you a stud fee?

Would you chose a pick of the litter first to keep or not?
stud fee is £350. it's a friend who is an AB so not an issue regarding stud fee payment, No i won't be having pick of litter i have a 12 years old bringing a pup into the home wouldn't be fair on her.

Re: Using my dog at Stud dog?

Stud fees very much depend on the breed - so for shelties its £250, for collies and GSDs aroung £400 maybe more. My last sheltie litter I used a little used dog and paid once she was scanned in pup and received the paperwork then - she had 6 healthy pups. I once discussed using a border collie boy and she said she wanted 'pick of the litter' but I said no one was picking a pup over myself, having brought them into the world I wasn't seeing the pup I wanted just taken away, if she went ahead she could have second choice. As the stud fee was to be the same price as the pups I wouldn't mind, but I decided he wasn't the right boy for her. With the shelties a stud fee would be a deposit for a pup rather than the price, so when I start using my boy next year if I want a pup from anyone I'll have to pay substantially to get one, but that's the nature of shelties :-)

Not strictly true lol, my boy has lived in the house with an in-season visiting bitch but he is a proper gentleman and unless his 'mat' is in place and I tell him that 'Yes, she is his' he will not try to get to her. He runs free all the time with bitches and with other males, never far away from me and under complete control with just a hand signal. It is how you are with them, as to how they will react later on.
dexter, swarthy and cloverfan like this.
