Losing coat/condition after pups?

I have always heard and seen bitches droppping most of their coat and looking very moth eaten after whelp. At what point this starts I have no idea. My girls pups are nearly 8 weeks and apart from very slight thinning of coat on her legs, she is in fantastic condition.

Is she likely to go to pot or have I just been lucky. Does having an excellent raw diet all the way through pregnancy help? I am beginning to think so, nearly every other bitch with pups I know start dropping coat at around 4 weeks post whelp and most of them are on kibble.

This was my first litter, so only going by my experience

My girl has had 3 litters (small litters) and her coat has been fine, no difference, she was fed on Bakers! ( now on ND!)

Re: Losing coat/condition after pups?

my breed start to drop a lot more coat between 3-4 months after a litter, then they look like smooth collies and and by the time they look presentable again have another season and drop coat again.

Re: Losing coat/condition after pups?

Stella lost quite a bit of coat in the first couple of weeks, my carpets looked permanently grey! It seems to have stopped now, and thankfully she still has a decent enough tail. I always think they look so weedy without their tail feathers! It didn't help that I trimmed out a lot of her back leg and bottom hair too They are 5 weeks old now.

It's her first litter so it'll be interesting to see how it changes. She does look nice and glossy now all the dead hair has gone though

Re: Losing coat/condition after pups?

My bitch dropped her coat when her pups were about 9 weeks old, it took her all summer before her coat grew back (pups born 3 April, 9 weeks beginning of June, coat just growing back properly October).

Re: Losing coat/condition after pups?

I wonder if mine didn't drop because she is a non moulting breed?

Re: Losing coat/condition after pups?

One of my girls is strange when it comes to coat dropping, she's had 2 litters over the years and her coat stays thicker until her next season is due then drops it. If she's not bred then her coat drops about 2 weeks BEFORE her season, but if bred not at all......strange girl I have....
