Re: is it fair...........

I think if you were very, very sure that it would not adversely affect the pup then yes; but how you could be so totally sure is certainly a problem.

We got Kilo just before Christmas, but our Christmas consisted of just hubby and I (we have no children) and we knew that it was going to be just like any other day (with much more food!), with the bonus of me taking 5 weeks and hubby 3 weeks off work to settle the puppy.

Don't envy the breeders having to make the decisions though, especially at this time of year, as some people do seem willing to go to enormously dishonest lengths to get what they want.

Re: is it fair...........

when e got trouble she was due to go to homes on the 27th dec but i asked if they could have her for a few more days cause i didnt think it would be a good idea to bring her to a new home then to have to deal ith new years eve, not necessarily ours but all the general noise of the night somewhere she didnt know very well. they were happy to do that and we picked her up on the 2nd jan 2010.

we are looking at another puppy atm who will be ready 24th dec and it does worry me slightly. partly cause we are having two extra people over on christmas day (my parents so it ill be people she will have to get used to but still...) and partly because it means these pups will make 'excellent' christmas presents

Re: is it fair...........

Short answer...no!

My pups are 8 weeks on Christmas Day. In fairness I've only had one person want one 'for' Christmas, and was quite happy with my reasons why she couldnt. (She didn't in the end - wrong colour!)
I'm not so worried about after Boxing day, to the right people, as it's an ideal time, holidays and so on.

I don't want them to go anyway so I don't want to ruin my Christmas saying goodbye to the little chaps

Re: is it fair...........

HI,
i would not have any counter-indication in letting them go on Christmas, with festivities come holidays...and people will be at home with the pups, in fact more people than normally will be at home with pups...and the possibilities of overwhelming the pups are very scarce (in my opinion) because at that age they are like sponge, they adapt well to anything really...imagine how calm they will be afterward if the necessary precautions will be taken.

having said that, a breeder must make sure that such precautions are indeed taken and if there is any doubt that they will be taken....then the pup should not go in that setting whether it is Christmas or not...
my thoughts....
best
D

Re: is it fair...........

I think it depends on the home the puppy is going too...

If its a home with excitable children which normally involves a manic household with a mulitude of visitors then I personally wouldnt let mine go.

However it is was someone with no children who is planning a quiet Christmas at home I think this would be a relatively good time as people will be home from work x

....that being said My house is manic at Christmas with 2 small Children so in reality I have totally contradicted myself still at least they would be used to my Children and equally my Children used to the pups so it would not be a novelty.

Re: is it fair...........

I think it would depend on the home. Christmas here is no different to any other day except that I cook a turkey and hubby and I get each other a small gift. If anything Christmas would probably be the best time for me to get a pup as my husband is off work and would be able to help out and the pup disturbing his sleep wouldn't matter at all as he wouldn't have to be up early for work for a few weeks.

That said, I could fully understand a breeder not wanting to send pups to their new homes around Christmas.

i dont think it is, too much noise and excitment going on, the puppy would probably be a little frightened, i imagine going to a new home when everything is calm is daunting enough never mind over xmas and new year. i personally think a puppy should be brought home after the new year, maybe 4/5th january when all the comotion is over with and puppy can be settled into a more calm and relaxed environment
