Thumbs down Pomeranian breeding help

Hi everyone im currently trying to breed my pom for the first time, she had all the checks etc, but this my first time and the stud owners aswell, we are finding the female keeps trying to mount the male, is this normal? Any advice on the breeding process would be welcomed and on how best to mate them, I have advice from the vet but want different views

Re: Pomeranian breeding help

Have you got a mentor? The breeder of your girl should be able to help/ involved if her lines are being used.

Has your stud owner got a mentor? If not I would possibly find a chap/ owner who has done this before and can offer more experience.

I have never bred but would like to one day if i have the right dog to improve my breed and way more knowledge, so I cant help but it seems like a massive thing to undertake for two newcomers, not even getting into the issues of the pregnancy/whelping/homing the puppies debate (this forum takes ethical breeding very seriously quite rightly)

Not to sound harsh but if I didnt have the support of a mentor I dont know if I would go ahead as so many scary and expensive things can happen.

Maybe talk to your breeder?

Re: Pomeranian breeding help

hi fiirst of all you need to get in touch with someone who is experienced in stud work, you cannot let them "just get on with it" its very dangerous for both dogs. I wouldn't be asking vets for advice on breeding most haven't a clue. You nees someone with experience to assist you.

Re: Pomeranian breeding help

Aren't they called "the heartbreak breed" because of the high mortality rate amongst both bitches and puppies. Sadly, somebody with labs is of no use to you.

You must find somebody with Poms to advise you.

Please contact your girls breeder. If that isn't possible, contact the Pom breed clubs, you'll find their details through the Kennel Club web site.

Re: Pomeranian breeding help

Hi, again, your own dogs breeder would probably be the best help- but I would get in touch sooner rather than later if I were you; not sure of poms, but I know with yorkies it is Extremely rare and risky to put an inexperienced stud to a madien... If neither dog knows what they are doing, risk of injury more than doubles. And you are right, a pom breeders advise will be far more useful than a general vets (a repro vet would be great though).

Re: Pomeranian breeding help

To be a novice and have novice dogs is asking for trouble, sorry!

You need to have someone actually with you for the mating to be hands on if needed, and to repvent something going wrong.

Its not a situation I would recommend!

Re: Pomeranian breeding help

In addition to Ceearott's post above, I wouldn't put a maiden bitch and maiden stud together - much less with first time owners too.

Better to find an experienced stud and experienced handler for your girl.
