My dog is pregnant and acting sick:(

My dog is 40 days pregnant, shes a "bit large" yorkshire terrier. She hasnt had any problems up until now and suddenly she started limping a little and will barely walk, only when she needs to "go". Now all she wanna do is sleep and i'm wondering what to do, she was eating and drinking earlier so i dont know if shes stopping with that but i'm really worried. I don't really have the funds to a vet so i'm wondering if this is normal behavior

Re: My dog is pregnant and acting sick:(

You need to get her to a vet and you need to find some money from somewhere fast, talk to one about setting up a credit arrangement if needs be. If she needs treatment during whelping, c-section etc, you can't afford to hang about just because you don't have the money, her life, and the lives of the pups could be at stake. You're also going to face larger food bills, for her and for when the pups are being weaned, and at this time of year, the electricity bill will go up as well, as you'll be cleaning bedding/towels more frequently.

Tbh, if you could get hold of the funds or set up a credit agreement with your vet, I'd suggest you had her spayed as it's the least risk for her, and it doesn't sound as though this is a planned mating.

Re: My dog is pregnant and acting sick:(

Have to totally agree with the others, this girl needs to see a vet ASAP.

I am not particularly knowledgeable on small breeds - but was this bitch health-tested before mating? it could be something like a pulled muscle, but it could also be a joint / back problem which needs veterinary intervention ASAP - if she wasn't health-tested beforehand - it's possible the extra weight has exacerbated any pre-existing problem - please get her to a vet - and seriously consider the possibility you may need to terminate this litter.

With the greatest respect - I know all about money being tight (I imagine the majority of people do at the moment) - but notwithstanding a really dramatic unexpected event over which I have no control happening (and could happen to anyone) - when I plan a litter - I always ensure I have the money aside for vets fees and raising the litter - which has, on occasion, meant the dogs eating like kings while we eat like paupers.

How are you going to cope if she needs simple veterinary intervention during whelping or afterwards, even this can quickly amount to a few hundred pounds, never mind the cost of a possible c-Section and the need to hand raise a litter if the worst happens.

I don't know if the PDSA will see a pregnant dog, but you really urgently need this looked at - because if it is her joints / back - without wanting to frighten you - she may not get as far as being able to whelp the litter

Re: My dog is pregnant and acting sick:(

I agree you should call a vet.

I know this is off topic but is it OK to advertise American Pet Supply companies in your signature? (Not the OP but the previous post) . That`s a new one on me.

I'm not sure abut the PDSA because i don't know much about them but i know our blue cross won't, because it's a place that only people in receipt of housing benefit can use and they see breeding as something that people on a low income shouldn't be doing, not sure if this is entirely the reason but this is the general idea from what I hear.

If you go to most vets nowadays they'll set up some kind of credit agreement, I know quite a few round here do including my own, ring them all if you have to someone will....but she really does need to see a vet it sounds like something is definitely not right.
I really do hope she's ok....keep us updated won't you.
Good luck

Re: My dog is pregnant and acting sick:(

Not aimed specifically at you op, but I do wish people would realise that yorkies are not easy to breed- and darn expensive.
A huge problem with pregnant and whelping YT is pre-eclampsia, and is she is having problems standing it could be what's wrong- it hits yorkies hard and fast if this is the case, so money or no she Needs a vet. There is so much you will need to do for her when she gets closer to whelp, and you're aware that you have to deliver pups for her, not leave her to it? (I mention this because eclampisa in YT is in every book and. Website about breeding them).
Please let us know how things go at the vet.
