Breeding from my patterdale......

Im wondering wether to breed my patterdale bitch when she comes into season this feb i would work out as im off for 6 weeks around the time she is due and i am able to spend all day and night with her to ensure the puppies and her are fine i have the funds to support this litter and i have an idea which stud im going to choose if i go ahead with the idea and she will have had all the nessacary tests prior to the mating ? patterdales are becoming less popular and i would realy like to better this breed by adding my bitches progeny to the blood lines any comments welcome and will be taken into consideration thanks

Re: Breeding from my patterdale......

And thats not much time to do all the research into possible Sires either!! I spend at least 2 years planning my litters.............

Much more I could write, but I will refrain.

I can see you have the breeds interest at heart, but that means you need to do much much more research before even thinking of breeding.

I was surprised actually that you said "Patterdales are becoming less popular and you would like to better the breed by adding your bitches progeny"
The reason I was surprised was because there seems to be an increase in the number in both breed welfare and general re-homing centres of Patterdale and Fell Terriers as I think they are also known. On checking the Patterdale Terrier Rescue, it seems to confirm this in the number of strays being found and handed in/rehomed as being "unsuitable" as pets. They seem a breed that has come from nowhere as regards to popularity to very popular. There are some native british terrier types I know that are on an almost endangered list, but I dont think the Patterdale is perhaps one of them.

None appear to be required for Patterdales, but eye testing for glaucoma is recommended by some.

I'd also suggest terriers had their knees checked by someone knowledgeable, to ensure there's no problems with luxating patella, seems to be something they suffer from.

Re: Breeding from my patterdale......

How refreshing.
I suggest you find a respected Patterdale breeder and discuss it with them.
