sick puppy- Aspiration Pneumonia

Hello

Having a bit of a nightmare recently

I had two chihuahua bitches due to give birth, maisy and lily

Maisy started pushing two weeks ago at 12am in the morning 3 hours passed so rang the vets and ended with a c section.
All was fine but one had a cleft palate right at the back. My husband and hand fed for 7 days and night every 2 hours. He just wasnt going anywhere and one morning lost 20g. vet advised to put him to sleep. we tried

Anyway my other bitch lily started to give birth at 2am in the morning, she gave birth to one and i waited 2.5 hours nothing else. I was worried another pup was in there so went to the vets a 5.30am. She only had one we were shocked.

a day passed and lilys boobs were getting massive with the huge amount of milk, so i gave her one of maisys pups a smaller boy that was getting pushed out. her boobs are perfect now but god did she have a lot of milk

Anyway on friday night lily knocked one of the pups out of her bed as she was digging (not that she didnt want it) this was in the middle of the night, the pup was squeeling. We woke and put the pup back.

Anyway ever since his squeak has not been right

yesterday he started gagging and walking around with his neck out screaming. Its heart breaking. Like something is stuck.

So i rushed to the vets thanks to my brother as my husband has my car as his is broke

vet said there is rattling on his chest and his breathing isnt right. She gave him a antibiotic shot that will last 24 hours and i have to pick up some drops tonight as they didnt have any in.

But today he has been gagging more, ive been holding him at a angle and rubbing him which helped yesterday but not so much today. It horrible to see him in this pain its like he has something stuck in this throat. He does calm down after a while

He is feeding, but has lost a little weight

Born at 123g, highest was 164g, down to 157g yesterday and today 155g.

Anyone been through this?
Ive rang the vets again today for more advise who confirmed it is Aspiration Pneumonia

Re: sick puppy

I have no experience of this but I just wanted to send my best wishes for you all and hope that the vet can get to the bottom of it.

Re: sick puppy

How old is the little pup that is gagging? I had the exact same symptoms with one of mine in my last litter and after many different opinions from the vet it turned out to be worms causing the problem, although the pup had been wormed, it turned out that as he was so small and the worms were quite large he just could not pass them, causing him to gag, cry and struggle

Was this just over the phone though? My vet refuses to give a diagnosis unless the dog is right infront of him- even if he had seen it within the last few days... You need to take him back in and have a few tests run (including for worms) and have his temp checked...
Hope all goes well for you and him.

Re: sick puppy

No she saw him last night. I just rang her today to update her and ask her what his condition is called. She probably told me but I'm 8 months pregnant myself and I forget easy. Vet said there is nothing else they can do at the moment until the antibiotics have kicked in which can be a couple of days

May be worth asking them to consider this, my vet explained that in small pups the worms can overwhelm them, sometime coming up the food pipe this is what causes the coughing and gagging. The vet can actually put a tablet right down inside it's belly to try and stop this and then do an enema. The earlier you catch it the more chance the pup has. Just a thought as my vets first diagnosis was the same as your vets. It was only when the pup didn't pick up after the antibiotics that he researched further. Unfortunately my pup didn't recover as he was just too tiny and it was too late

Really hoping you have a better outcome for yours x

Re: sick puppy

Thank you. I'm currently sitting in the vets with him waiting to be seen. I'm booked as an emergency. Spent well over £500 at the vets in the last 2 weeks but I would never let my dogs suffer
