Husky eye colours and breeding

I know nothing about huskies and was wondering if a husky has eyes of different colour, are they any reasons not to breed from that bitch? Health implications, genes etc?

I am not a husky owner but I believe it is not considered a fault for a husky to have eyes of different colour.

Re: Husky eye colours and breeding

any eye colour is perfectly acceptable, as is bi-eyes (eyes different colours) and parti-eyes (different colours within the same eye)

Its entirely normal even in the breed standard. Eyes can be Bi-Eyed one blue one Brown, Two Blue or Two Brown. You can even get a split eye, where on closer inspection the actual eye itself is part blue/part brown.

In certain breeds blue eyes or one blue eye can be associated with deafness expecially I think if combined with white coats. Think it may apply to cats too actually Siberian Huskies though totally normal. Alaskan Malamutes though Blue eyes are undisireable.

Re: Husky eye colours and breeding

as SDH says the blue eyes in huskies are not linked to the coat colour as in other breeds, its a seperate gene.... so there are no breeding considerations like there are when breeding merles, it dosent affect health. Ive got a bitch with a split eye and one with blue eyes, i have friends who have bi-eyed dogs one of my friends has a red dog with green eyes, all are perfectly acceptable

You got great answers already, but I also wanted to let it be known to future readers that blue eyes or bi-eyes in Sibes are NOT rare! I see so many byb advertising blue eyed Sibes as rare. Blue eyes are just as common as brown or hazel eyes. I adore this misunderstood breed!

Re: Husky eye colours and breeding

The breed standard says

Eyes
Almond-shaped, moderately spaced and set obliquely. Any shade of blue or brown, one of each colour, or parti-colours equally acceptable. Expression keen, but friendly, interested, even mischievous.

It works the other way too - I've lost count of the people who have told me my dogs can't be "proper huskies" as they don't have blue eyes!!! (Apart from Summer, that is, who is obviously a "proper" husky!!)

It's when I see Malamutes advertised with "rare blue eyes" that I get really riled. Any Mal with a hint of blue in it's eye's is crossed with a Sibe somewhere along the line!
