Re: new here

Hi, glad the birth went well. You will need to stay with her whilst the pups are small 24-7 especially with a big litter, they are easily laid on and many puppies die because their mum doesnt realise she is laying on it. What breed is she? i cant help on the feeding the pups as I have never needed to but I am sure someone will be along soon who does know. I would definitely feed some to mum in her food and she will need plenty of protein in her diet to keep up with the milk production. She should be on a good quality puppy food also. You will need to weigh them all daily to check they put on weight. You will need to look out for signs of eclampsia(not trying to panic you) as dogs with large litters can be more suseptable(sorry bad spelling) Postpartum Low Blood Calcium in Dogs | petMD. Did she pass all the placentas ok?Is she in a whelping box?

I don't feed my pups Lactol (although i do give it to mum for the first few days) - but then I've not had a litter of 13 - and it is quite possible that they will need supplementing.

You need to get advice on feeding such young babies as getting it wrong can damage and potentially kill the pups.

You don't say what breed she is - but she needs to be fed on demand and very often - for an average size litter (7/8 pups) - I would have my bitches on around a kilo of a good quality puppy food plus beef, chicken and oily fish - and around a litre of Lactol a day (it's far from cheap feeding a bitch with pups - and your girl is likely to need more than this.

I have to ask - whilst I appreciate you had little control over what happened with your girl - why was she scheduled to be neutered when she was in season confused:

Bitches are normally neutered around 3 months after a season - neutering during a season would normally be limited to serious, possibly life threatening situations as the risks to a bitch are high.
